Welcome to the PPL Electric Utilities Power Lab

The PPL Electric Utilities Power Lab at Penn State Harrisburg, is a multi-use facility for research, education and industry support.  Located in the Educational Activities Building (EAB) on campus, the lab offers opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, as well as faculty to perform advanced work in electric power systems and energy areas.  A Department of Defense (DoD-ONR) funded Plug-and-Play Microgrid test bed, situated in the lab facilitates research work in distributed control of power systems, renewable energy integration, AC and DC micro-grids, smart grid technologies, power electronic devices and converters, networking and communication, automation and relaying, simulation of large scale systems, and other emerging electric power technology areas.

The objectives of the PPL Lab are to:

  1. Conduct research in advanced power system related areas
  2. Provide undergraduate and graduate students with advanced physical facilities to practice concepts presented in the classroom
  3. Perform studies, conduct tests and evaluate hardware and software systems for equipment manufacturers and utility industry
