Welcome to the website of the Militarized Interstate Dispute dataset, produced at Penn State. A militarized interstate dispute (MID) is defined as a threat, show, or use of force by one state in the international system against another state. The latest version of our dataset (MID 4.3) identifies 2,315 MIDs within the years 1816-2010. Our NSF-funded team is currently working to code additional years of MIDs.

The MID dataset is the most widely used international conflict dataset, having been cited over 3,000 times. The MID project dates back to the 1980’s, and the fifth iteration (MID 5) is currently underway. The MID project is part of the broader Correlates of War Project.

Please see the links above to learn more about the MID project and to download the data. Questions can be addressed to Professor Roseanne McManus.
