Janine’s ePortfolio Thinkings

Salutations. So I’ve brainstormed a bit about what I’ve written this year and what I can do with it in my ePortfolio. I’ve come to the wonderful conclusion that, save my rhetorical analysis speech first semester, everything I’ve done has been nature-related, just like ME! That made me happy because not only do I have a common thread around which to base my ePortfolio but these writings might actually be useful sometime later in my academic career. HUZZAH!

So without further ado, here are the artifacts I plan to incorporate into my ePortfolio:

  • Paradigm Shift Paper – About the growth of the ocean sciences and how the study and understanding of the oceans has changed in the past 50+ years
  • TED Talk (if I have it…) – All about the National Ocean Sciences Bowl and how competitions like this encourage science enthusiasm in high schoolers to lead them on to careers in ocean advocacy and ocean leadership
  • This i Believe – Why and what I love about nature
  • Costa Rica Passion Blog – Detailing my experiences on the BIOL499A trip to Costa Rica over Christmas break
  • Civic Issues Blog – Talking about the declining health of our oceans and linking it to the failed legislation of the Kyoto Protocol and investigating why Kyoto failed
  • Persuasive Essay & Advocacy Project – Encouraging the involvement of “citizen scientists” in conservation efforts, research, and education to create a more educated public and aid the work of conservationists. Creating an online resource for conservation involvement for concerned community members in and around Centre County.

So yes, each assignment I did was tied to nature or conservation or something remotely ecological. I’d like to present them together as way to represent myself as someone who is scientifically inclined and passionate about science, but also able to effectively communicate what I know to people who aren’t scientifically inclined.

Science advocacy is ALL ABOUT being able to turn science-speak into something scientifically dumb people like congressmen can understand. Because if they don’t understand it, they make the wrong choices and polar bears go extinct. I’d like to use these artifacts and this ePortfolio to showcase not only my passion for science, my my skills in conveying those passions in a meaningful and accessible way.

Great idea! Since nature is so important to you, this will allow you to show off your beliefs and your writings. Keeping your audience in mind, this will also be a good theme because you can use it in the future careerwise. As for your website design, this theme will be great! You can include a lot of your own Costa Rica pictures and it will have a very personal, artistic, green feel to it. I’m excited to see your ePortfolio. Good luck!

I love your idea! It really shows who YOU are and how you have developed as a writer in presenter over the course of the year. I love the tie into nature – it really portrays your personality. You seem to be off to a great start, but make sure to really revise your work to be the best it can be. With your portfolio, I envision a lot of cool, naturey pictures – be sure to include some good ones!

I love this idea, Janine! And I think you’re including some great pieces. (I’m excited to see some of the work you did last semester!) This blog theme might also allow you to use some of those awesome Costa Rica photos as banner images, etc.

One of the ways you might group these pieces is to think of them in terms of reflection vs. activism or personal vs. public…something that captures the different ways you’re dealing with nature, from your bedroom to the classroom to national and global issues. Can’t wait to see it!
