Employment

Undergraduate Students:

The Miyashiro Lab seeks highly motivated undergraduate students interested in receiving research credit for contributing to research projects involving microbiology, molecular biology, and image analysis.  Our lab is interested in understanding how animals obtain bacterial symbionts from their environment, and how these bacteria interact to establish symbiosis. Using the symbiosis established between the Hawaiian bobtail squid and a bioluminescent bacterium as our model system, we can explore the impact of bacterial diversity on symbiosis. Students will contribute to this project by isolating and characterizing novel strains of bacteria, using microbiology and molecular biology tools common to our lab.

Selection criteria:
A strong interest in research and excitement about science. Must be willing to commit to 10-15 hours per week for at least 4 semesters plus one summer. BMB, MICRB, BIOL majors preferred. Minimum GPA: 3.3. Students that have taken MICRB 203 course will have priority.

Please visit BMB’s undergraduate research page for steps to apply, and email Dr. Miyashiro (TIM14@psu.edu) with a statement of your interest.

Graduate Students:

Interested graduate students should visit Penn State’s BMMB graduate student program website.
