What I’ve Read and Watched Lately (AKA Just a Rant About Cobra Kai)

Welcome back to the blog! It’s been a minute since I’ve updated the blog, so let’s just dive right in!

Cobra Kai - Rotten Tomatoes

Cobra Kai (Netflix Series)

*spoilers ahead*

Honestly, this show is just absolutely nuts. The level of suspension of disbelief needed to watch this show is absolutely absurd. For example; karate instructors physically assault their students, vandalism and property destruction occurs MULTIPLE times, a kid nearly DIES, and the police are never called. Only one kid, who is honestly the most logical person in the show, pointed out the intentional harm Cobra Kai was inflicting on its students, but he STILL didn’t seek out law enforcement. I think the first time anyone actually got the police involved was to file a restraining order, and that wasn’t until the series was like 3 seasons in. It is important to note that one kid (who unintentionally almost killed a fellow student) was sent to juvenile detention, but they never mention a hearing, or even really anything about the judicial system.

Furthermore, all of the characters are kind of garbage. Here’s my breakdown:

Johnny Lawrence: Does have a redemption arc and he did grow on me, but he’s still kind of sexist, so that’s not great.

Daniel LaRusso: He thinks he is like the epitome of good which just comes off as annoying and entitled sometimes. Plus, he doesn’t really have a personality.

Miguel Diaz: This guy was a KING in the first few episodes and was honestly an icon. Then, as he trained with Johnny Lawrence, he became a worse person. I get that that’s part of the plot, and he does recover from it, but it just really hurt his character in my eyes.

Samantha LaRusso: She is pretty annoying. Also, she literally caused pretty much all the issues in the show because she liked two guys and whenever she was in a relationship with one of them, she still kind of flirted with the other? Also, she and Miguel kissed when they were BOTH DATING OTHER PEOPLE after having broken up previously, which prompted a massive fight (started by Miguel’s then girlfriend Tory). This goes for both Miguel and Samantha, but they both tried to “move on” from each other by dating new people, but honestly it just ended up hurting the other two people they dated. Literally like 80% of the rivalry and hatred stems from Samantha and Miguel’s relationship, and they weren’t even together very long.

Robby Keene: Honestly, he’s probably the best character in this show. He’s really cringey, but at least his actions are based.

So honestly, this show is just a wild ride that has A TON of questionable moments. Also, the whole concept of warring dojos is just kind of cringey in my opinion. All these kids think they are so hardcore and cutthroat but like they are just unnecessarily starting fights in school, bullying people, and providing the audience with an unlimited source of secondhand embarrassment.  Yet, the show is weirdly somewhat entertaining, and somehow I’m on season 4 already.

So, if you approach this show with the expectation that it will have the character development, dialogue, and plot of a live action Disney channel show, I don’t think you’ll be too disappointed. Let me know if you’ve seen this show and if you have, what your opinions of it are!

  1. I enjoyed reading your blog post! I have heard so many mixed reviews about Cobra Kai but I think after reading your blog, I might finally start it! I think I said this before but I really like reading your explanations of the show and also your feelings on the events that occured. I’m already excited to read your next blog and see what else you have watched or read recently!

  2. I have never watched Cobra Kai, but I have seen trailers and have heard lots about it so it was interesting to read your post. From the trailers, it looked very cheesy and like a Disney channel show, so I am glad to see that someone who actually watched the show agreed with me. Despite numerous friends recommending this show to me, I just don’t think I’ll be watching, especially after hearing more about it from you.
