Welcome back to my blog! I hope you enjoyed last weeks post about bucket hats. This week I’m so excited to be talking about square-toe shoes! Like before, we are going to discuss a little history.

Square-toe shoes are seen throughout Japanese history as far back as 300 A.D., where their shoes were made out of wood. They gained some more recognition in the 1960s in America. Square-toe shoes then became extremely popular in the 90s. They are seen in popular movies, T.V shows, and even in music. But, like most trends, they faded into a distant memory. That is until the summer of 2019, when these shoes made their return to the fashion industry.  Daniel Lee, the creative director for Bottega Veneta, is likely to thank (or blame) for this trend coming back.

Before the huge comeback of these shoes, people considered them “mom shoes.” However, if you are one who pays attention to fashion trends, you might have noticed that some 90s fashion trends have been returning. That is because a lot of people have been getting back into 90s entertainment such as the show Friends. This trend has especially become popular in men’s fashion. However, the trend is less socially accepted than it is for women.

Now at this point, you might be wondering “what in the world do I wear with square-toe shoes?” I’m here to tell you. Square-toe boots go with pleated skirts and neutral colors on top. Nude sandals go with dresses. Strappy heels go with long, denim shorts, graphic tees, and blazers (which seems like a mixture of a bunch of different styles, but I’ll go with it). Sandals are to be worn with slim jeans and denim shirts. I mentioned last week how I didn’t know denim shirts were a thing, but apparently they are super popular. I also know that kitten heels are popular, and I had no idea what those were. I hope this gave you some ideas on what to match your square-toe shoes with.

Now I will give you my personal opinion on square-toe shoes. I honestly think they look like spatulas for feet. I understand that they may be more comfortable than pointy shoes, or even curved shoes, and I’m all for comfort. But, they are just not my style, and not for me. Remember, I am definitely not a fashionable person, and this is just my opinion. If you are able to pull them off, good for you, but I will probably never try them.
