This article explains how Iraqi security and volunteer forces have broken ISIS’ siege of Amerli. Amerli is the home of many Shiite Turkmen. The Shiite Turkmen were enduring very hard living conditions put on them by ISIS including food and water shortages and complete absence of medical services. ISIS called the Turkmen heretics and there was fear of a future massacre. Iraq had been battling ISIS and the United States has been conducting airstrikes to help protect the ethnic minority. This article uses a thematic map because the country of Iraq is shaded yellow and stands out from the rest of the subjects on the map. The map helps explain the article by helping readers know what country the events took place in but I think it should include the specific location of Amerli.
