Mean Girls

o-MEAN-GIRLS-facebook-1A through and through chick-flick, Mean Girls is one of the funniest and one of the most quoted movies among my group of friends. Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert star as the leading roles, and I think part of the reason why this movie is such a hit is due to the fabulous casting. McAdams and Seyfried especially have become big names in the movie business, and Mean Girls was one of their first big hits. Released in 2004, Mean Girls has now been around for over a decade (which makes me feel a bit old.) But over the span of these eleven years, the film has retained its immense popularity and it has landed among the all time greats of Teen-Flicks, much like John Tucker Must Die and their newest comrade in comedy crime, Pitch Perfect.

Mean Girls has that special mix of chick-flick, with humor. Not only has it become a girl’s night essential, but speaking from experience, a large portion of males do enjoy the film for one reason or another (humor, hot girls, etc). A plot which follows Cady Heron, a new girl in high school try to figure out where she fits in best, she finds herself on a “spy mission”, after having infiltrated the popular group of girls. On the first day of school she formed two friends, Janis Ian, a goth-emo chick, as well as Damian (the gay best-friend). Cady agrees to spy on the catty trio (Regina, Karen, and Lacey), from the inside of the group. Attempts to sabotage Regina start out including cutting holes in her shirt, and having her gain weight. But by the end of the movie, we find that Cady has become one of them. Going from a math nerd, jeans and a baggy t-shirt, to the lipgloss, tight pink clothes, and that particular way of talking, Cady turns full blown diva just like Regina. To make the plot even more interesting, Cady falls for Regina’s (ex-boyfriend/boyfriend) causing even more drama and sexual tension. With even more memorable actors and actresses like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (Parks and Rec.), Mean Girls is literally chalked full of powerhouse comedians and divas.

Although Lindsay Lohan is not my favorite actress in the entire world (rather, she ranks towards the bottom of my list), as the main character Cady Heron, I believe she did the role justice. Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert, however, kicked it out of the park. Regina George (the queen bee of the three, played by McAdams) is a character that you absolutely love to hate. But at the end of the movie when she gets trucked over by the school bus, you almost feel bad for her (almost). Rachel McAdams may be one of my very favorite actresses, and so I love the movie on principle. Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert play Karen Smith and Gretchen Wieners, two incredibly ditzy girls that not only add to the humor and appeal to the film, but provide some of the most quotable quotes from the movie. Some of my person favorites are, “There’s a 30 percent chance that it’s already raining,” “Boo you whore,” “On Wednesday’s we wear pink,” “You can’t sit with us!”, “So if you’re from Africa, why are you white?”, followed by “Oh my god Karen you can’t just ask people why they are white!”, “She doesn’t even go here”, “Don’t have sex. You will get pregnant, and you will die.”, and “Four for you Glen Coco, you go Glen Coco.”, just to name a few of the greatest. (Click for more ridiculous funny Mean Girl Quotes)

As you might guess, Mean Girls is full of laughs. A movie designed to “make fun” of the high school dilemma of popularity, girl drama, and boys, teenagers find this film to be quite the hoot-n-holler. All in all, I would definitely recommend this movie as a must see. It’s a great movie to have a laugh with your friends about how ridiculous teenagers can be, and even the boys will love it, because it is just so fetch.

11 years, wow. And “fetch” still hasn’t happened. I find Mean Girls to be one of those funny movies I remember, but I don’t think I see as much re-watch value in it as many people do. In my personal opinion, it’s a watch-once-in-a-while movie, simply because I think a good deal of the humor is lost if you already know what the punch line is and when it’s coming. However, Mean Girls has certainly shown its value in world of “expressions through gifs.”

This is actually my favorite movie. Despite its stupidity at times and its reputation of being a chick flick, it has won my heart. I think it actually has life lessons to learn about being yourself, what it means to be a friend, and self esteem. Not to mention it is hilarious and relatable for most teens. I love this movie because it takes things to extremes and shows what can happen when people get too focused on being the “Queen Bee.”

I absolutely love Mean Girls. I believe that their take on the high school drama and its entirety is the perfect blend between ridiculous and realistic. I think it is one of the classic chick-fliks and one that is quoted fairly often. Even my guy friends are familiar with the movie and its plot. The famous and fabulous cast also adds to the movie. While I also am not a huge fan of Lindsey Loan, I think she plays the part really well and the three other mean girls characters are very rememberable. Overall this is a movie of our generation and everybody should know about it.
