The Beauty in Baggy

This past Sunday, January 26th, the annual Grammys aired on Television. The Grammys is a time to showcase some of the best artists and of course looking stylish while doing so. This year, teen musician Billie Eilish owned the Grammys in bringing home five Grammys. Man, thats talent. People were not only talking about her stellar performance and her victory of winning but she has become the talk of the fashion World as well.  Her baggy Gucci red carpet and performance looks were bold and dare I say… iconic.

On January 28th, 2019 New York Times writer, Vanessa Freidman had written an article titled “Billie Eilish Won the Red Carpet, Too”. Freidman discusses how Eilish has not conformed to what the traditional female would wear on the red carpet. Eilish’s choice of wearing various baggy Gucci shirts and pants from the red carpet to her performance speaks volumes to the fashion community. Eilish is one of the few artists who is not afraid to break down the boundary in showing females that baggy can be chic, bold and even sexy, in an “untraditional” show off your cleavage have a slit running so far up your leg, way.

This story is most defiantly portrayed in a positive light. Many people know Eilish and her popular songs, such as “Bad Guy” however,  her most prominent target audience are young females aging from the range of 14 to 30. As a young female in todays society, many of us become scared to wear what we want because of so much peer ridicule and judgement. Eilish has sent a strong message to her audience in showing women that you do not have to show off your body in order for your outfit to be “cool” or accepted by society. Eilish is speaking volumes to the fashion industry and are helping women realize the true beauty in baggy.

If I were a PR folk for Billie Eilish I would tell her to continue to wear what she wants and to never feel pressure to fit in to what society thinks a women should wear. I would also love to see a collaboration between Billie Eilish and Gucci, a designer that she frequently wears. Although Billie does sell merch and has a clothing line currently at H&M, this collaboration would be different in her name wouldn’t necessarily be on the article of clothing. It would be clothing that she has created and that she herself would wear. If the collaboration were to be done, a lot of promotional content would be created. One media platform that I would focus on is creating a real and raw behind the scenes promotional video for her clothing collaboration with Gucci. We would see the process of why she chose to create the pieces and her raw thoughts on the fashion industry today and why she feels the beauty in baggy.Eilish performed in Gucci.

This article was media driven. Eilish created a lot of buzz on media and the fashion industry about her outfit choice. Eilish is not only crushing the music industry but she is taking the fashion industry by storm in breaking down barriers that people were too scared to do in the past.
