Next up is a New York City staple! Smorgasburg is an all-time-favorite and gives me major summer-time vibes!

Smorgasburg is the largest weekly open-air food market in America, attracting 20,000 to 30,000 people each weekend to eat from 100 local vendors. I’ve seen them set up in areas throughout Brooklyn and even by World Trade Center!

Personally, I think the idea is mind blowing! With over 23,000 restaurants in New York City (which would take 22.7 years to try), Smorgasburg sets up vendors for each affiliated establishment. At these vendors, they sell their most popular finger foods, keeping you satisfied, yet hungry enough to try the foods at other amazing vendors.

Some of my personal favorites finger foods from these vendors are the kebabs, mini sliders, waffles and ice cream, and their fresh-squeezed lemonade. On a hot summer day, these items HIT the spot:)

Smorgasburg even partners with various different events to bring food to the party. My favorite event has been one in Brooklyn, a couple of years ago. Located in Brooklyn Bridge Park (which has AMAZING views btw), Movies with a View brings a new outdoor movie, every Thursday night!

To say this experience was phenomenal, is an understatement!! Brooklyn Bridge Park is located right under the Brooklyn Bridge, facing the water and the New York City skyline. The evening started off with local DJ’s getting the party started. As the sun went down, we were able to help ourselves to the food, which was set up by the ocean-front and organized by Smorgasburg. When it was dark enough, the movie was turned on, boasting the beautiful New York skyline in the background. I wish COVID wasn’t a thing, just so I could go back:(

If you’re planning a city trip for this experience, an adventure tip would be to walk the Brooklyn Bridge! It goes from Manhattan into Brooklyn, and it’s just beautiful to see the skyline in its prime. Once the movie ended, me and a thousand other viewers walked the bridge back into the city — oddly, it was a great bonding experience.

I hope this post gave you some insight on the next food on your NYC bucket list! Along with the experience, Smorgasburg has the potential to add some great adventure to your trip as well:)

6 Thoughts.

  1. This sounds really fun! I have never been to New York before, but this type of event would be really cool to experience. Being from a more rural area in Pennsylvania, the closest thing I can relate this too is probably one of the county fairs (but I don’t really think they are even close enough to be comparable). After the pandemic settles down and things get back to normal, I wonder how many events like this will change or no longer occur. People will (hopefully) become more health conscious, so do you think large gatherings like this will be toned down or shut down all together?

  2. I love how you told us exactly how long it would take to try all of the NYC restaurants. Not only did it shock me, but it illustrated just how cool it is that Smorgasburg exists. I love this blog so much but it always makes me so excited to explore all the city has to offer. Sadly, in the midst of a pandemic it isn’t the safest thing to do. I am okay with waiting though because now I know that once I do get to go again, it will feel better than even before. I will be sure to add this to my to do list for when I get there!!

  3. Wow! This looks so cool. As a kid from the suburbs of PA, I knew that New York had a lot of food options. However, 23,000 restaurants in NYC is crazy and 22.7 years to try all of them?! That sounds like I might have to make a bucket list. I’ve been to a few food markets and loved the experience. Thank you so much for sharing about Smorgasburg. I really want to go now, lol. Just need to wait until COVID-19 is over and everyone is able to come together and eat at festivals like this one again. Maybe I’ll see you there!

  4. Wow I have never hearf of Smorgasburg before but it sounds amazing! I love trying new foods so I know I would love it. New York City has so many cool things to offer especially for foodies, I hope to go there soon when COVID is over. I am also interested to know what that food is called in the ssecond image, it looks so good!

  5. This sounds like so much fun!! I mean it doesn’t get a lot better than being outside with friends on a summer night in a cool place eating good food. The atmosphere you described sounds amazing, with the DJ playing music and the city skyline as a backdrop. That picture with all of the people watching a movie against the water and skyscrapers is remarkable– it looks like such a good time. This is definitely something that I want to experience!

  6. This is an excellent idea! Unfortunately with COVID-19 this year I doubt that they will host Smorgasburg. My dad and I are huge foodies and love to try everything we can get our hands on when we’re in New Your City. This is a great opportunity to just get a small taste of all your favorite foods without filling up too fast, which is perfect. I also really like how you described the movies along the waterfront, that sounds absolutely breathtaking.
