Guanajuato City
Type: City, Capital of Guanajuato
Location: Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Guanajuato city is one of my favorite places to visit not only because it is 25 minutes away from my hometown, but also because it was listed in 1988 as World Heritage by the UNESCO. The city of Guanajuato was founded in the early 16th century by the Spanish. It was a city with many mines, becoming in the 18th century the leading place for silver extraction.
Guanajuato is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Now, I’m going to talk about the places that you should visit.
Considered one of the most beautiful theatres in Mexico. Teatro Juarez was constructed between 1872 and 1903, being finally inaugurated by General Porfirio Díaz. Fun fact, General Porfirio Díaz was a dictator that was later overthrown in the Mexican Civil War. The theatre gives me unique vibes because it is old, but elegant at the same time. I have visited it a few times. In fact, my brother proposed marriage in this theatre.
When you think of mummies, you think of ancient Egypt. Let me tell you that there are mummies in Guanajuato. Yeah! It is hard to believe, but in “El Panteón Municipal” there are some corpses that have naturally mummified. Guanajuato is the only place in Mexico with natural conserved mummies. The corpses are well preserved because of different factors including soil composition.
The University of Guanajuato is one of the oldest universities in Mexico. The university was founded in 1732, and it’s famous for its 86 stairs that lead from the street to the main entrance. The architecture of the university is what makes it stand out. It is constructed with different styles including a renaissance structure and some neo-gothic finishes.
When the night comes, one of the best places to go to party is Grill. Grill is a nightclub that is settled inside a colonial house, giving a new meaning to what partying is. It is a combination of ancient structures with electronic and Spanish music, it takes you back and forth in time. One of the best places to visit if you are in town, you are above 18, and with the spirit of a party.
After a good night out partying the best place to visit is “La Plaza de la Paz.” It is in the historic downtown and it offers a lot of breakfast places to go to. My favorite place is “La Tasca de Guanajuato,” one of the best breakfast and lunch places in town.
Some honorable mentions are Forza 5 and Infinite. Forza 5, the new video game has some places inspired in Guanajuato City. Infinite, the movie has some scenes filmed in Guanajuato city.

Once again the photos do not disappoint. I would love to visit the mummies. I go to museums and exhibits every time I travel to a new place to learn about the area. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! another really cool post about a really cool place! I had no idea that Mexico had mummies, so that was super cool to learn. I also really like how you include a little bit of everything in your posts: food, places to visit, history- it all really ties in nicely together to form a really detailed description.
P.S. – super cool that your brother proposed in the theatre you mentioned!
