Introduction:
- Background of witches
- Do you have any of the following?
- Birthmarks identification, mole, third nipple
- Stubborn, strange, forward behavior
- Sex out of wedlock
- You’re a woman
- Ridiculous right?
- These were the ways you would have been looked at and if you had more than one you wrongly would have been convicted of being a witch
- Do you have any of the following?
-
- Origins of Christians in Europe
- Doing devils work
- King Saul sought the Witch of endor to summon the dead prophet Samuel’s spirit to help defeat the Philistine army
- Salem witch trials
- Single women, widows and other women on the margins of society were especially targeted
- Begun with Elizabeth parris and Abigail Williams suffered from hysteria and spasms apparently caused by demons
- Tituba confessed to being a witch
- Origins of Christians in Europe
- Are witches real?
- Tests they would conduct on women in court systems
- Ignorant minds didn’t provide the jury with enough exposure to the reality of what was occurring back then
- Historical growth of being ‘evil”
- Witches have always been shown as evil in a sense of using their powers for revenge
- Book of shadows highlights how most witches practice wicca in US and Canada
- Today magic is used to stop people from causing harm
- Avoid evil, strive to live a peaceful, tolerant and balanced life in tune with nature and humanity
Why is the lack of ‘gender roles’ in witches an issue?
- Causes an ideal of only woman are wicked and maleficent
- Woman were only considered witches due to some unbalances of mental aspects that then resulted in mental illnesses being classified as them being crazy and witchlike
- Harry potter changed gender roles by using a man figure as a hero, who is also a witch
- Propaganda
- “witches live among us”
- ” cast out all witches and devils”
- “witch hunt”
- “Witches of the world unite, give them hell cast a spell”
2. Mindless accusations to idolization
- If you predict something you would have been hung
- Today people grew up watching witches being idolized on tv shows; Sabrina (teenage life growing up), Halloween town (saving the town), Harry Potter( male figure hero that’s a witch), and vampire diaries (witches caused curses but still were the main solution to solving issues)
Call to action
- Bigoted minds have transitioned over time and resulted in the growth of something that once caused people to be so sinister, and allowing this shift to be seen, can ignite new flames to spark change on preconceived ideas of a word that may or may not be who they are.
(show images of words today associated with people who are assumed to be what they are due to the term)
- Be aware of when you call someone a witch, whether its with the w or b, there’s always a deeper meaning behind the ideals of a word and knowing the origins of it can change the game.
I like how you presented the background of witches with rhetorical questions because it helps to engage the audience. I appreciated how you included to analyze the Salem Witch Trials and the Harry Potter series because the majority of your audience is probably familiar with these topics (I for one had to read “The Crucible” in high school and I read/watched the Harry Potter series).
I agree with Kelli’s assessment, the strength of this paradigm shift is in the transition of cultural perspective from the Salem Witch Trials into idolisation and envy.
You definitely have more than enough info for this topic, im really excited to hear about it. its very unique, cant wait!
