Have you ever watched lightning hit the ground during thunder storms? For that matter, have you ever really listened to the thunder? According to Japanese mythology, there are creatures called the Raiju that are often mistaken for lightning and thunder. They are composed solely of lightning, though they generally manifest themselves in the form of four-footed creatures. The Raiju’s most common forms include the wolf, fox, weasel and cat. However, they are usually seen in the form of a white or blue wolf, since they are fierce and proud creatures.
Their forms are so variable that it is often hard to spot a Raiju. They are impossible to see in their lightning form, and even their animal forms seem intangible. Their hair is long and laced with streaks of silver that resemble lightning. Those that are older tend to have more silver, since they gain wisdom and power as they age. They’re body is about double the size of a wolf, which creates an imposing presence. They seem to emanate power and a strong sense of intelligence, which increases this presence. When a human looks into their eyes it becomes clear that the Raiju know how weak our species is, but that they’ll leave us alone because they can’t be bothered by a human.
Raijus have the ability to fly, and they can do so at insane speeds. They do not take on a tangible form when they travel this quickly, which is why they are often mistaken for lighting. Their howl even sounds like thunder. Since they travel at such high speeds, they leave lightning scorches on trees and buildings. They bound through the air when they become agitated, so the scorch marks are due to their claws that manifest themselves when the Raijus touch physical surfaces. Generally, they are calm and harmless, which is why it is unusual for lighting to leave scorch marks anywhere.
The Raiju possess a crazy amount of abilities. They are associated with the lightning god Raijin, so they were extremely blessed by him. The Raijus’ greatest abilities include electricity manipulation, the transformation into a lightning ball form at will, weather manipulation, and flight. Their lesser abilities are related to their physical abilities: enhanced speed, strength, balance, senses, and flexibility. They even have night vision (which is helpful considering thunder storms usually darken the sky!).
Though the Raiju are independent creatures, they have been known to pair up with humans when the union is mutually beneficial. In general, Raijus have a will of their own, and therefore their own agendas and goals. They don’t bother telling anyone about these goals, so their actions are often viewed as erratic. When their goals do line up with humans, they make a one-time deal with them. As soon as their goal is completed, they leave again. Very few Raiju have been tamed, and those who have only allowed themselves to be because it lined up with their personal agendas.
I truly believe the Raiju is a beautiful creature. They signify power, loyalty, and intelligence. I would love to see one up close (if they existed!) just to see the blend of colors in their fur and the fierce look in their eyes.
