12×14: “Odd Man Out” Recap

The 14th episode of the 12th season of Grey’s Anatomy had a good mixture of interesting surgical cases as well as the usual personal drama. The episode starts out with Richard noticing that the residents and attendings have all been pairing up for a long time now. Jo is working with Callie in Ortho, Penny is working with Meredith in General, Steph with Amelia in Neuro, and Ben with Jackson in Plastics. Richard decides that he needs to switch up the resident pairings, which makes things interesting for this episode.

Penny gets Amelia, who hates her for what happened with Derek, while Jo gets Meredith, who seems like she can’t stand her. Jo doesn’t want to be in Meredith’s service because she says Meredith treats her like crap, doesn’t take her seriously, and doesn’t support her relationship with Alex. Jo keeps whining about it to Steph, who tells her that she just needs to confront Meredith because she is tired of listening her talk about it.

Meredith is also conflicted about what to do with Dr. Thorpe. Apparently Thorpe has been calling and texting Meredith all day long asking her out, but Meredith ignored him. She tells Maggie and Callie that she’s planning on not going out with him. Maggie and Callie encourage her to give Thorpe a chance and tell her that eventually she has to get back there.

Meanwhile, Ben gets assigned to Arizona’s service, and they treat a pregnant woman with quadruplets. The woman is a tax attorney, and she gives Ben and Bailey advice on their taxes. This causes some tension between Ben and Bailey, since he is uncomfortable that Bailey makes a lot more money than him.

Arizona keeps asking April to tell Jackson or to let her at least run some tests on the baby but April refuses to do it. Arizona is really worried about April, so she talks to Alex in hopes that he’ll be able to convince her, and Alex says he’ll talk to her.

Jo finally confronts Meredith and yells at her that she doesn’t respect her and doesn’t take her seriously. Meredith doesn’t really react, but then after talking to Callie and Maggie, she realizes that maybe she hasn’t been fair to Jo. Meredith talks to Jo and says that she only acted that way because she is protective over Alex and she feels responsible for him. After that, Meredith goes outside and Thorpe is waiting for her. He asks her out again and the scene ends with Meredith contemplating what to answer.

April is still conflicted on whether to tell Jackson or not about the baby, since she doesn’t want Jackson to go through what he went through with Samuel. She finally decides to tell him, and goes looking for him. She opens the door to the lab and finds Arizona and Jackson talking. Jackson looks at her and he says, “So when were you planning on telling me you were pregnant.” April is shocked and looks at Arizona like she betrayed her. This was a really shocking moment for us viewers too since we didn’t expect Jackson to find out that way. All I know is that I’m sure we haven’t heard the end of this April/Jackson baby drama.

12×13: “All Eyez On Me” Recap

This episode of Grey’s Anatomy was heavily focused on surgeries, something that has been lacking in the previous episodes. You would think that Grey’s, a medical drama, would focus more on actual cases, but this season has been somewhat lacking in that department. This episode, however, had Callie, Meredith, Bailey, and Jackson perform a really cool surgery on an army veteran. The idea behind the surgery was to replace both of the guy’s legs and instead just make him have one leg. I don’t really have any medical knowledge so I’m not sure if this is even possible (it doesn’t seem so), but all I know is that apparently it has never been done before, it’s very risky, and the guy would die without this treatment.

The doctors go to a different hospital to treat the guy, and the Chief of Surgery greets them. Dr. Will Thorpe interrupts and says that he doesn’t think they should perform this dangerous and risky surgery on his patient, who has no chance of surviving. Callie interjects and says that they are confident that they can save this man and give him a chance at life. After they walk away, the doctors don’t seem as certain though. It seems like they were only able to practice one time instead of the multiple times they were supposed to since the patient was in critical condition.

Before the operation, they all stand in the scrub room and try to motivate each other to do well and be able to successfully complete the innovative surgery and save the guy. Callie gives a great analogy about how they all have to be squirrels, since squirrels store nuts for the winter, but they don’t do it all at once, and instead they do it one nut at a time. She says that everyone has their part to play, so everyone needs to handle their own nut. When they start operating, Callie realizes that the method of treatment she was going to use won’t be possible anymore. She starts to freak out because the guy is on the operating table and they don’t have a course of treatment. Dr. Bailey sees that Callie is starting to become overwhelmed, so she gives her a little pep talk and tells her to be a “squirrel.” Callie says she has to step out to think about what to do, and Dr. Thorpe is rightfully worried and annoyed at them since she promised she had a good plan.

Again, I don’t know much (or anything) about surgeries or medicine in general, but somehow Callie is able to think of a new way to perform the surgery. She goes back to the operating room and tries her technique, and she is able to successfully save the patient. As they are leaving, Thorpe apologized for his hostility and congratulates them on the surgery well done. Before he leaves, however, he asks Meredith out and she unknowingly gives him her number under de guise of checking on the patient. Meredith hasn’t dated anyone for years since she started dating Derek so this was somewhat weird to see, but it also felt refreshing to see Meredith moving on.

This episode wasn’t too interesting in terms of personal relationships and the usual drama, but I have to admit, the surgery was pretty cool to watch. I’m usually not into medical stuff, but Grey’s has a way of sucking you in and making you care about the patient and the case. Besides, I’m sure soon enough we’ll have more personal drama to make up for it.

12×12: “My Next Life” Recap

This episode of Grey’s Anatomy was more of a “filler” episode, but I thought it was still a really good one. The episode was used as a way to show how far Meredith has come in the 10 years she’s been working at the hospital. The first patient she ever treated, Katie, is readmitted to Grey Sloan due to seizures. Her previous injury was due to unexplained seizures, and Derek was the doctor on her case. Katie is shocked that they still let Meredith be a doctor, since she says that she was a mess that day. Amelia is now her doctor, and they find out that she’s been having seizures again due to a huge aneurism, which she has to clip. Katie asks Amelia if she’s as good as her brother was, and she replies that she is but we know that she’s always had insecurities when it comes to her brother.

Meanwhile, Meredith is working on another case with a woman who can’t stop bleeding from an injury. They’re supposed to put pressure on it and it’ll stop on its own, but they ended up having to operate. As Meredith and Riggs rush with the patient towards an OR, she makes eye contact with Katie, who now sees that Meredith is actually a good doctor. Amelia is able to clip the aneurism successfully, and we can see that she’s feeling confident as she deals with some of her previous insecurities. Meredith’s patient, however, didn’t make it, which is really sad since she was finally going to reunite with her long-lost son. He arrives at the hospital right after she died and we all can’t help but feel really bad for them.

Richard, Maggie, DeLuca, and Arizona had a really funny dynamic on this episode. DeLuca just found out from Maggie that Richard is her father, and he is mortified since he told him last week that his girlfriend was a “wildcat.” Richard is not happy with DeLuca, and the situation is only made worse when Arizona jokingly comments during surgery that DeLuca and his mystery girlfriend are always having sex and that she must be wild. DeLuca gets extremely embarrassed and Richard keeps glaring at him while Arizona obliviously keeps talking. Richard also gets more than he bargained for when he asks Arizona about the dates she’s been going on and she reveals a little too much information, but there is a sweet moment between them when Arizona thanks him for helping her get out there and date again after she got divorced from Callie.

We finally found out what happened between Riggs and Hunt, and it seems that Hunt is mad at Riggs because he blames him for his sister’s death. Apparently Owen’s sister Meg got on a helicopter to go treat her patient during a storm, and the helicopter crashed. Owen is mad that Riggs didn’t take Meg’s place. Honestly, I don’t think Owen should blame Riggs for Meg’s death, since Riggs knew that Meg would never accept staying there and leaving her patient.

Overall, this episode was really good and it felt like many of the characters are starting to move forward. The flashback scene with Derek saying his trademark “It’s a beautiful day to save lives” was so bittersweet but also helped us fans get some closure.

12×11: “Unbreak My Heart” Recap

Last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy focused entirely on Jackson and April’s relationship. It started with Jackson and April sitting with their lawyers about to finally sign divorce papers, and April asking Jackson if this is really what he wants. The rest of the episode is a series of chronological flashbacks going back to the first moment they met.

The first flashback is of April and Jackson arguing the same day Meredith was attacked. April is mad because Jackson gave her divorce papers in the middle of the ER and they started arguing about it. After that, it rewinds to the scene from the mid season finale, in which we finally found out what Jackson said to April after they had sex. He said he wanted to get a divorce and couldn’t do it anymore, which I guess is pretty evident after seeing what happens in the “future.”

After that scene, it rewinds to April and Jackson’s dinner after their couple’s therapy session. It shows the two of them having a nice dinner at first, but April getting defensive over some comments made by Jackson. It seems like there is still a lot of tension over April leaving to go to the army for months after their baby died. Jackson feels like he put April’s feelings over his own, despite the fact that he was also deeply hurting. However, April feels as though she was dying after Samuel died and she had to go to the army and do something meaningful with her life. After arguing, they end up sleeping together, but it only makes things more awkward between them.

The next scene from the past is sometime in season 11, when April is in Jordan and Jackson is still in Seattle. Here we get to see the extent of Jackson’s suffering after April left when he had to take down the crib and clean up Samuel’s room, but ended up smashing it and having a breakdown. This scene is incredibly heartbreaking, and we get to see why Jackson was so upset at April for leaving him alone with his grief. We also get to see how much April suffered a few days after she got back from the hospital. She was sitting in Samuel’s room alone staring at the wall, and Jackson tried to help her by suggesting they could try again, which was really insensitive and only makes the situation worse.

The scenes before that are very different, since it shows the moment they found out April was pregnant in season 11 and the moment they got married in season 10. It shows extra scenes from the previous episodes we’ve seen, where they are happy and in love. The last flashback scene is the first time they met back in season 6, when April was an annoying intern and Jackson was someone trying to escape his family’s legacy.

After all these flashbacks, we are back in the present when April and Jackson are about to sign divorce papers. Jackson finally answers April and tells her that he’s sure that he wants to get divorced. April, who’s holding back tears, signs them and goes home. Once she’s at her apartment, Arizona arrives with multiple bottles of alcohol and asks April to pick what she wants. April says she doesn’t really want to drink, and Arizona says as a joke “You just got a divorce and you don’t want to drink? What are you, pregnant?” April, however, doesn’t laugh, and tells Arizona that she just took a test that morning and she found out she was pregnant. This makes it clear that things aren’t as over between Jackson and April as we thought they were. Overall, this was a really emotional episode but a very good one. It gave us some insight to their relationship and we got to see more to each side of the story.
