12×16: “When it hurts so bad” Recap

This episode of Grey’s Anatomy was pretty good, but overall, somewhat calm. Nothing life threatening happened, instead, the episode was more focused on romantic relationships. The episode started out with Meredith inviting Thorpe inside to her house, and they sleep together. The morning after, Maggie was in the bathroom when she heard Meredith screaming at Thorpe to get out. Maggie and Amelia freak out and kick Thorpe out, since they think he attacked Meredith. Thorpe tries to defend himself saying he didn’t do anything, but Meredith’s sisters quickly kick him out.

Meredith refuses to talk about what happened with Maggie and Amelia, but instead she forces them to clean the house and goes a little crazy with the cleaning. Alex comes over, thinking that there was some sort of crisis, but instead is roped into cleaning with the other three. Amelia and Maggie are talking about their guy problems with Owen and DeLuca. Maggie decides to go talk to DeLuca since he’s been acting weird lately. She goes to the hospital and confronts him, and DeLuca says he’s not okay with her being his boss, so they break up.

Meanwhile, Callie and Penny are in bed about to go to sleep (gross, I hate Penny), and Penny tells Callie that she loves her. Callie doesn’t know what to say, so she says “thank you” and it’s a really awkward moment.

The morning after, a nurse approaches Penny and tells her that Sofia, Callie and Arizona’s daughter, is in the ER. She says both Callie and Arizona were in surgery so she thought Penny should go be with Sofia while they get there. Penny panics, since Callie hasn’t introduced her to Sofia yet, but she goes anyway. She stitches Sofia up, and then Callie comes and she tells Penny that she didn’t introduce her to Sofia because Arizona wasn’t comfortable with it. Penny goes to Arizona and apologizes, saying that she didn’t mean to overstep her boundaries. Arizona is confused, and tells Penny that she never said she was uncomfortable with it, which means Callie lied to Penny. Arizona confronts Callie and tells her to leave her out of her business with her girlfriend, and that she’s tired of being in the middle of things. Callie apologizes to Penny, and they leave together with Sofia to get ice cream (ew).

Meredith and Alex talk, and she reveals that she freaked out with Thorpe because she thought of Derek after. We all can’t help but feel bad for Meredith and really sad over Derek’s death. She talks to Thorpe and explains what happened, and he tells her that he really likes her and he’s willing to wait until she is ready to date again.

There’s also lots of drama going on with the April and Jackson situation, since Catherine Avery, Jackson’s mom and Richard’s wife, is in town. She talks to April, making her think that she sympathizes with her and is on her side, but at the end of the episode she tells Jackson that they’re going to sue her.

Overall, this episode mostly focused on the doctors’ messy relationships and screwed up lives. It was a pretty good episode, even though I can’t help but wish some things turned out differently.
