Lesson 9 Blog: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Lencioni’s model of team dysfunction includes five characteristics: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results.

In my team, the dysfunction characteristic of “absence of trust” was evident, caused by a highly competitive environment. Team members were reluctant to share information, ideas, or concerns openly due to a lack of trust in one another. This lack of trust impacted communication and collaboration, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts within the team.

Despite the challenges posed by the absence of trust, our manager led trust-building activities to address the underlying issues. We participated in team-building exercises, open discussions about our strengths and weaknesses, and activities aimed at fostering mutual respect and understanding. Over time, these efforts helped to gradually build trust among team members and create a more supportive and cohesive working environment. While our team did not completely overcome the dysfunction of trust issues, we made significant progress in improving our ability to work together. We were better equipped to solve problems collectively and complete group projects successfully. Our improved communication and teamwork also contributed to a more positive and productive work environment overall.
