For today’s RCL5 post, I chose a TED Talk that I actually watched a long time ago and found interesting. The speaker talks about something I think is really close and important, especially for all the girls in this world: looks. The Ted Talk entitled, ‘Looks aren’t everything. Believe me, I’m a model.’ is a Ted Talk given by model Cameron Russell.
Model Cameron Russell enters the stage at the start of this TED talk wearing a form-fitting black dress and high heels. She switches into a flowy skirt, a cardigan, and black flats a few seconds into her speech. This had an enormous effect. What it demonstrated is that how one seems has a significant impact on how others view them. Although appearances are essential, they do not accurately reflect a person.
During her discussion, I came to understand that she is just a typical person who also happens to be a model. She is a human with insecurities, just like everyone else, particularly women and girls.
Dispelling the misconception that everyone would be happier if they were just a little bit skinnier, model Cameron Russell offers a candid perspective on her field. The discussion’s most interesting section may be when Russell exposes the tactics of the glamour industry by displaying candid images taken on the same days as stylish, expert photos.
After watching the Ted Talk, I have more respect for models. The idea that the models on magazine covers are naturally born that way is debunked in this Ted Talk, and I believe more women and girls should watch it. It’s ok if not every sort of female physique is the same. We all feel self-conscious about our appearance, but it’s critical for girls of all ages to recognize that the images on magazine covers are unrepresentative of reality. We must discard the mindset that being pretty is everything because it’s not.
I also really like how Russell deliver her Ted Talk. She was so calm, honest, and she tried to demonstrate her speech very well. From her speech, I can also see how well she demonstrates ‘delivering a speech’ rather than ‘doing a presentation’. Although she did use visual aids, she was more of delivering a speech by how engaging she was with the audience. I feel like doing a presentation is something more formal, and you can totally see how different it is between those two.

I think the problem of anxiety in appearance is gaining more and more attention. Also, models are meeting more strict limitation and pressure of how they look in particular. Moreover, there is a possibility that the skinner models are, the more persuasion of losing weight among public. Nevertheless, the persuasion reflect back to the models by asked to be come slimmer. That vicious circle needs to be properly treated in case of leading to a lose-lose situation.
I have also seen this TED Talk and found it very interesting! I think it is important to remember that models are just people and have insecurities as well because it helps to reaffirm that fact that looking a certain way does not equal happiness. If you had the perfect face and body you could still have insecurities or other problems in your life. It’s important to remember that beauty isn’t everything.
