The picture I show you is a picture produced by two students from Birmingham City University to call out social media for putting pressure on women.
Social media is widely used nowadays, with an estimated 3.6 billion users globally. But often browsing through postings can affect how you view yourself, especially if they contain images that make you feel bad or exalt a particular body type.
It might be challenging to stay away from images and statements that might make you feel unfavorable about your body because social media is populated with people who only exhibit themselves in their best light.
I like how the picture is made in black and white. The black and white theme of the picture gives a bold statement on what it trying to say. A black-and-white photograph can stand out amid a world of color. And the more the background is colorful, the more the eye is driven to the sharp focus of a black-and-white image. This is why I think the image is really powerful and make a bold statement.
There are also not a lot of elements in the picture: it’s just a person in the bathroom turning her back towards the audience with some words written on her back. By not having too much in a picture, I believe this makes it easier for the audience to see and understand what was trying to be delivered through the picture.
The messages were also written in capital letters and the arrangement in terms of sizes helps to boldly highlight the message it trying to say. WHEN YOU WRITE IN ALL CAPS IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE SHOUTING. Perhaps the most well-known application of typographic tone of voice is the use of capital letters to convey strong emotion. Therefore, having the written words in capital letters gives stronger emotions towards the image.
I believe this picture speaks a lot to its audience and deliver a very strong message to help people especially women, to turn their back on the pressure from social media and start appreciating themselves instead of comparing it with others.
