“You can always look at it the other way around”
by Anne Cattaneo in the Pina Bausch Sourcebook

At the crux of Bausch’s art is her unwavering courage to follow the material ‘into something else’- to embrace the complexities and the contradictions as the material transforms itself without judgment or oversimplification. The energy and desire it takes to push out into what is mysterious, along with the intellectual acumen to acknowledge and wonder at the many sides of things, are for Bausch the essence of the female sensibility.

Cattaneo’s essay “You can always look at it the other way around” revolves around sexuality, female power, and our feelings and fresh emotions that arise throughout childhood to adulthood. Do we feel powerful, scared, excited, etc. when we experience new scary things around sex?She tries to arouse those emotions once again and be able to share them with the world.

The actual performance opens with a piece of an empty stage besides a man and women standing on either side of the stage, slowly removing pieces of clothing as the intensity grows between them.  Moments like this are things we all experience through life, so we can connect with the content, but watching the rawness of it happen right in front of you is what keeps the audience fascinated.
