In Penn State’s recent success on the football field, the number of learning experiences for the freshman on the team have been numerous. Many watch the upperclassman on the football field learning more about the game and how to play it everyday. One of these players that has been consistently learning so far this season is Drew Hartlaub.
Freshman Drew Hartlaub is from South Western High School. In high school, Drew played many different positions but he plans on focusing on playing safety/corner back at the collegiate level. Drew started playing football at young age, being one of the many sports that he tried. “I was always good at it from the start and all of my friends were playing it too”. These same friends were one of the key reasons why he kept playing football, “The relationships I made in football were really important to me playing, most of my good friends were on the team and it would feel wrong not to be on the field with them”.
Football has taught a lot to Drew but the most important thing it has taught him is how to make and use a routine. “The thing I probably learned the most was how to stick to a routine. I’m really busy with schoolwork and practice so I have to make a routine. Coming into college I had to make a routine by myself and couldn’t rely on people like my parents like I did back home. Also being busy and making a routine helps me get ready for getting a job and managing the other parts of my life”. Drew said that he has also gained a sense of self-belief and understanding of competition. “I am competing against the best everyday, that’ll help me when I have to compete for a job and give me more drive”.
Drew currently is currently undecided on a major but is thinking about something in business. He said this would most likely lead into something with insurance because that is currently what his father works with. Outside of school and football, Drew acts like the average day college student. He likes to hangout with friends, spend time with his girlfriend, and play video games. “I’m just a regular person outside of football. I don’t really do anything extravagant, I hang with friends and play video games like everyone else”.
Drew thought there were many ways to describe Penn State football but ended up calling it the best. “We’re the best, both on the field and in the classroom. No other program hits all the areas like we do at Penn State”. As for Drew’s favorite part of Penn State football he said, “I love seeing how fun it is to be this successful. I love seeing what it is like to win at that level and the pay off it gets”.
