There have been many great women athletes and coaches who led Penn State teams to successful seasons, earning conference and national honors in the fifty years since Title IX enactment. This section displays only a small sampling of images of athletes and coaches who were among the best during their collegiate careers at Penn State. The collection link below leads to the collection guide and inventory of more than 11,000 men’s and women’s athletes, coaches, and administrators dating back to the 1880s. Materials in each file may include photos, biographical material, newspaper clippings, and magazine articles for a specific athlete.
Audrey Hichar
Audrey Hichar was one of the top bowlers on the team from 1979 to 1981 and helped the team to the WIBC national championship in 1979.
Don Ferrell
Don Ferrell was the coach of the men’s and women’s bowling teams from 1976 to 1982 when the program was discontinued. He had a record of 53-6 and led the women’s team to the WIBC national championship in 1979. Ferrell was the men’s freshman and assistant basketball coach from 1970 to 1975 before taking over the reigns of the bowling teams.
Margot Beldon
Margot Beldon was an instructor in the College of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and the women’s bowling coach from 1971 to 1975, when she compiled a 30-2 record.
Kathy Marra
Kathy Marra was one of the top bowlers on the women’s team from 1970 to 1972.
Pat McClellan
Pat McClellan was on the women’s bowling team from 1973 to 1975.
Valerie Bright
Valerie Bright was a top bowler on the women’s team from 1977 to 1980, helping to lead the team to the WIBC title in 1979.
