Possible Passion Blog Topics

In the current moment, I have two big interests. Considering that I just moved to a new state, and a completely different area than my hometown geographically, one blog topic I could potentially see myself writing about is my explorations of this new area, especially through the seasons. I recently explored the arburitum, which was beautiful, and I’ve been told that there are a ton of beautiful state parks and hiking trails nearby. I am working on being more independent so I think combining being independent with exploring the world around me is a wonderful idea.

I have been a musician since fourth grade, and currently, this is the first time since then that I have not been taking classes for an instrument in some form. I have my electric piano in my dorm with me, and I could foresee myself blogging about learning new music and becoming determined to relearn my old musical talents once again. Over the summer, I brought up to my parents that I wanted to finally learn the guitar and take lessons, but it was too late for me to learn before college started. If I choose this as my blog topic, I will make it my mission to regain all of my musical talents that have been hiding for the past few months in the absence of instruction.

Commonplaces in the Government

Although I hate getting political for school assignments, I feel as though the best commonplace example in the media is the Trump 2020 election slogan, “Make America Great Again.” The reason this commonplace can be persuasive is because it uses common election lingo to create a slogan insinuating the feelings of all Americans. The slogan itself is a bit of a generalization in the sense that all Americans have vastly different feelings on the state of their country, which is proven by the fact that there are different political parties and elections every year. This slogan not only insinuates that Americans should not feel like their country is great, but it also persuades them into thinking that Donald Trump is the one who could make America great. The use of the word “again” in the slogan is also misleading, because if we look at America from a historical context, we can see that over time, America improves. So, if America is not great right now, how are we supposed to make it great again? Are we referring back to the times when people were discriminated against? Or, are we referring to back when our country was in a “Great Depression.” The slogan, misleading in many ways, is a perfect example of a commonplace, a phrase or saying that is made to confused or contradict exactly what one would think it is clarifying. Commonplaces like these can be seen everywhere, but this example just stuck out to me because for most people, the Trump 2020 commonplace was just very hypocritical. Even for supporters of Trump, many would take this commonplace at surface value and fail to see the meaning behind it and how it contradicted itself. For these reasons, I felt as though this slogan was the most perfect example of a commonplace for this assignment and blog post.
