“Wait for You” by Future

I have never heard any of Future’s songs, so I was very curious about what vibe and style his music is. I’m going to be honest–I think “Wait for You” is my least favorite song that I’ve had to review.

To begin, the entire song is a simple beat which I didn’t mind, but it also made the song not memorable. Also, Future and all the other featured artists used autotune (as a stylistic choice) which isn’t something I enjoy listening to.

Although, I do think the lyrics and story of this song were interesting. It’s about an on-and-off relationship or a situationship.* In other words, it’s unstable. The narrator is constantly repeating that he will always be waiting for the woman, regardless of where and when. Neither of the people in the relationship want to continue hurting each other, but they can’t help reaching out and constantly rekindling their relationship.

A lyric that stuck out to me was “I can hear your tears when they drop over the phone” which is a perfect depiction of an on-and-off again relationship. These types of relationships are emotionally draining, but they are addictive. The lows are very low, but the highs are very high, so one can’t help but chase after the high. Also, it’s very hard to end a relationship for good because feelings are involved. Even if you’re crying because of the other person, you can’t help but pick up the phone when they call.

One part of the song that really stuck out to me was when almost the same line was repeated near the beginning and near the end of the song, but one part of the lyric was changed. The first time around it’s “Get mad at yourself ‘cause I can’t leave you alone,” but near the end, the same lyric is repeated but “yourself” is replaced by “myself.” I believe this change is very significant because it shows this toxic relationship is caused by both people. In the beginning it’s easy to blame the other person, but one must eventually see that they did play a part in it as well.

This song will not be added to my playlist. As I mentioned before, I don’t like this song, and I don’t feel an emotional attachment to it. Also, Drake sang a part of the song in his autotune voice which was a major jump scare.

*a word to describe an unofficial romantic relationship that has yet to be labeled

  1. I like the little footnote you added at the end– just wait until you get to your issue brief because you’ll have a million of those. Good work!

  2. Neat post! I have to say, autotuned music is a pretty interesting topic to mull over. I know that the Killers specially made Sam’s Town without Autotune because they didn’t like the usage of Autotune in Hot Fuss.
