“Self Control” by Frank Ocean

I enjoy Frank Ocean’s work and do love a few of his songs, so I was excited to review “Self Control.” To begin, I was very confused by the high-pitched/chipmunk voice that was in the beginning and throughout the song, but after further research, I have learned it has significant meaning. Ocean utilizes this voice throughout this song and other songs in the album Blonde to represent a younger version of him who is living through the events of these songs.

For those who don’t know Ocean’s song “Self Control,” it’s about a right person, wrong time type of relationship. The two partners love each other, but they have very different lives and values, especially because of how they grew up shown displayed through lyrics like “wish you grew up on the same advice.” They both know it can’t work, but it’s still hard to let them go and move on. They’re trying to go out, have fun, and forget, but the ex is “dancing with tears in your eyes.” The line “Keep a place for me” is repeated constantly by Ocean and by the ex which represents not only a physical place, but also a place in their heart. They want to keep the door open for each other, and even if they don’t get back together, they want their partner to always hold a flame for them.

I honestly really like Frank Ocean’s sound in all his songs. Although I enjoy hip-hop and dance music, it sometimes gets overwhelming in settings where you just want to relax. Ocean manages to utilize modern hip hop sounds but maintains the acoustic feel of other genres, such as soul. This specific song incorporates an acoustic guitar with distorted sounds that creates a surreal feeling. Also, I really loved the echoey sound during the last quarter of the song which created a euphoric-like experience. I could feel his emotions throughout the entire song and the hurt and love this relationship gave him.

I love a good break up song whether I’m in a happy relationship or not, so I know this song will always be enjoyed. Also, it’s just a genuinely enjoyable song that’s pleasant and an experience to listen to. Ocean manages to make the song artistic, and the readers can feel the thought that was put into each lyric and sound. As a result…I will be adding this song to my playlist!
