“What You Heard” by Sonder

Hello my readers! Welcome to the final post! It was very enjoyable to post on this blog every week, and it introduced me to new genres and songs that I probably would’ve never listened to if I wasn’t being graded on it. I hope you guys enjoy this one. :)))

I will be reviewing “What You Heard” by Sonder. To begin, Sonder is a music group formed by Brent Faiyaz and record producers DPat and Atu. Christopher Brent Wood, professionally known as Brent Faiyaz, is an American R&B singer who began his career by uploading to Soundcloud in 2014. Faiyaz eventually rose to fame in 2016 when he was featured on the GoldLink single “Crew.”

“What You Heard” is about caring for a woman who is not treated right by her significant other. The narrator wants to take care of the woman and to treat her right. This situation is very relatable as both the narrator and the woman. Sometimes we’re in a relationship where we’re not treated right, and all our friends constantly tell us that we need to get out of the situation. On the other hand, we’re sometimes the person outside of the relationship that can clearly see the person is suffering and needs to leave.

The lyric “If he was a winner…you wouldn’t have to worry ‘bout a damn thing,” sticks out to me because it’s easy to see the issues of a relationship or make these judgments when you’re not the one in it (Sonder). When you’re in love or even just care about someone, you make excuses for their actions or even ignore them. It’s easier to say you should leave the relationship if you’re not the two people in it.

This song have very light instrumentals made up of mostly vocals and a soft guitar. About 2/3 of the way through the song, it suddenly gets very quiet and slows down. The instrumentals switch to a bass, snapping, and a soft beat. This change in sound signifies the narrator is finally taking action and helping the woman leave the relationship and offering her comfort and treating her how she deserves to be treated.

Overall, I personally don’t like the sound of the music or Faiyaz’s voice. The lyrics aren’t very special or thought out and don’t do a good job at conveying the feelings involved with the situation described in the song. The concept itself is very interesting, but the song itself doesn’t illicit any emotions in me. As a result, I will not be adding this song to my playlist.
