Logic was Luke’s favorite artist in middle school, so I hope I do him justice with this review. To begin, “Under Pressure” by Logic was a little too fast for my little brain, but eventually, I became used to the speed, and the song became easier to understand and interpret the second time around. Logic has a very good rhythm and an amazing use of wordplay throughout the entire nine-minute song.

To understand this song a little better, it helps to know Logic’s background. Logic had an abusive mom and an absent father who was a drug addict. “Under Pressure” is about how his parents and his upbringing affected his career. He talks about the success he has achieved as an accomplished artist, such as mentioning “White Benz, black card,” while also referring to his humble starts with lyrics like “back in that basement, not a dollar to my name.” Most of the song is about how much his life has changed because of fame and success, including the positives, like the glamour, and the negatives, like missing the major life events of the people he cares about.  

The organization of the song was very interesting because it felt like we were just hearing the free-flowing thoughts of this man. The song begins with a very fast-paced, classic hip pop beat. It sounds like something that would be in a “Fast & Furious” movie. Then, about a 1/3 of the way through the song, the music slows and becomes more of a lo-fi type of beat. The last minute of the song keeps the lo-fi beat but becomes more hip pop. Also, there are voicemails throughout the song that serve as breaks.  

The first third of the song represents him constantly, furiously working to achieve success, and he finally does achieve it, which is when the second part of the song begins. When he finally reaches the level of success and fame that he has always desired, he realizes the struggles that come with it, like the endless schedule and fake friends. Finally, the last minute of the song is about him finding a successful balance between achieving greatness as an artist and experiencing the joys of life.

A line that is repeated often is “I’ve been feeling under pressure” which is when the music stops, and Logic slows down his rapping. I feel like this line represents the moments in his life when he slows down to re-evaluate and think. It’s when he realizes how much stress he’s under and how much of his life he’s missing out on.

I rate this song a 6/10. This song is not to my personal taste, but I still understand why people would love it because it’s a good song, and the lyrics and story are well thought out.
