Creating New Healthy Habits

At the beginning of every new year, I always have the same resolution:  eat healthier and exercise more.  However, as the weeks pass by, it becomes clear that this resolution is just not going to happen, as I’m sure many people can relate.  This is why I was originally drawn to this blog post, and ultimately to this blog.  The blog, titled “Rebecca Scritchfield’s Positively Healthy Blog” is very organized, visually appealing, and extremely easy to read.

The blog article I originally read is titled “Creating New Healthy Habits,” so I thought I could relate to it, since I always seem to struggle with this exact problem every year.  Rebecca discusses that habits will eventually become second-nature to us if we make them a part of our daily routine, make them public, and break them down into small, manageable pieces.  She also states that she got her information from a podcast titled “Getting in Good Habits” with Dr. Rona Renner, RN and Dr. Christine Carter, so she does cite her information.  The blog is written in a semi-formal fashion:  it’s not too formal and it’s not too informal.  I personally like this; it makes me feel like I’m getting reliable information, but it’s also entertaining to read.

Rebecca is very relateable and this makes her blog very easy to read.  While she does discuss statistics and facts (it is a nutrition blog after all) she does it in a way that catches the reader’s attention and makes you want to read more.  She gives suggestions that you can follow in your everyday life instead of difficult, long-term changes that are harder to accomplish.  She also reveals details about her own personal life, so this makes her more relateable as well.  She actually has an entire post about what she plans to change in the new year about herself, and she talks about wanting to make “healthy easier” where she lists a large amount of snack ideas that anyone could easily pack into their lunches everyday.  She also states that she wants to work out more, but to enjoy doing it, since that seems to be primarily why people aren’t exercising these days.  I love that, even though she’s a registered dietician, she admits that she could always have healthier habits and shows her audience that she has trouble with certain things, too.

The blog is also very visually appealing and incorporates many colorful pictures throughout the posts.  I love this aspect of the blog; if you scroll down without really looking at the text, the visuals pop out and draw you into particular articles that you might not have been interested in originally.  I know this was the case for me; I was scrolling down the page looking for interesting things to write about and I was drawn in by colorful pictures of vegetables and hummus, pistachios, and colorful sports drinks that looked delicious.  It turned out to be a sponsored post, so it was not something I would have originally looked at, but it turned out to be a very interesting read.

I would love to incorporate Rebecca’s organization, visual aids, and semi-formal style into my blog.  I think this would be a great way to entice readers to read my blog and keep them interested.
