Balancing Food and Fitness

The first thing that drew me to open this blog is the name, “Food to Fit.” Food and fitness are great complimentary counterparts to each other and it is a great name for a nutritional blog because it is more likely to attract fitness fans and foodies. I admire how clean looking and well organized the site is. It is easy to navigate and it is not overburdened with pictures, drawings and prints. The design of the blog is set up into different subjects including: food reviews, and nutritional advice for infants, tips on nutrition, meals, farmer’s market and controversial nutrition topics. Another aspect that drew me to the blog is that three women dietitians, Brooke, Amy and Dayna created and run “Food to Fit.” Their blog reaches not only more than one type of audience but because there are three different women writing instead of one person, the reading audience is exposed to more than one opinion.

However, the blog is just one component of the website. Not only do the women have a blog on their site, they also offer nutritional services to groups, work places or families. There is also a section on their website that shows their professional accomplishments in the media for example, articles they have published. If a person who needs nutritional assistance reads their “Food to Fit” blog and enjoys the blog topic, they might be more likely to hire them.

The women take a more informal approach when they blog. In some of their posts, they talk about their personal lives and experiences. By doing so, it makes it easier for the reader to make a connection and relate with the bloggers. Brooke, Amy and Dayna each have a similar way of writing that most people can understand without possessing a prior nutritional or fitness knowledge. From my point of view, the information they provide is pretty accurate and for posts where they use outside resources, they make a point to properly cite them at the end of their posts. Not only are the articles interesting but the titles of the posts draw the reader’s attention. Brooke, Amy and Dayna use creative title for their posts which include word play and puns. That is one of the first thing a reader will look at and if the title is not of interest, the reader is not likely to read the rest of the article.

I really enjoyed reading their blog. In some of their recipe blogs they included good nutritional information about that recipe. I feel that’s important to include and I would want to include that information in my blog because there are some individuals who must count carbohydrates or fats. If they are already provided for them, there is a better chance that the reader will prepare their healthier dish recipe instead of reaching for a pre-prepared meal that has its nutritional facts labeled on the box. I would probably use a similar web and blog set up and design. I really liked how their “Food to Fit” site appealed to the eye. It was decorative but still simple enough that I could focus on the blog itself and not be distracted by the background designs.

I saw at the bottom of their blog page that they have a link that readers can like that connects to Facebook and twitter. I would definitely want to include that in my blog because social media is a growing part of communication. It is a great way to get more people to read a blog and it is easier for their readers to share posts to their friends that they enjoyed reading.
