Bubbly Blogging

I was browsing many different dietician’s blogs, and I had the pleasure of discovering a wonderfully whimsical site to explore. The blog is called Grass Roots Nutrition and is written by a Registered Dietician named Holly Larson.

I stumbled upon this blog and it immediately caught my eye. First, because of the colorful and welcoming site. The color scheme and choice of graphics were appealing to me. She uses orange and green lettering and includes several pictures with each of her blog posts which makes the page enjoyable to look at. I was also drawn to the description she has in her headline, “Honest food based on evidence, no myths or fluff.” That is exactly what her blog entails.

Holly Larson informally writes several posts a month ranging from her personal experience with food and nutrition, to loads of recipes that she recommends. The blog appeals to me because of the ease of navigation unlike many blogs I have seen.   There were links to all of her previous blog posts easily accessible and visible. Along with the organizational factor, another reason why I liked this RD’s blog is because of her style. Her informal approach causes her blog to be very enjoyable and easy to read. Her posts are also very relatable. She has blogged in the past about how she stayed healthy in college and incorporated things she has struggled with that make me feel as if I can trust her advice. I also was very pleased that this blog didn’t have any ads popping up, overpowering her layout. Advertisements are distracting and take away from the reader’s experience.

Something that I would like to adopt from Ms. Larson’s blog is the way she makes everything she writes entertaining and easy to follow. I don’t like reading boring blog posts that solely display information and don’t have any personal attachment to them. I believe that you need to incorporate personal experiences and helpful information through simple and light language. I also enjoy all of the recipes that she posts. I think that many people visit blog sites for new and creative ideas when it comes to the kitchen. Her recipes included are healthy and relatively simple to create.

I really enjoy Ms. Larson’s blog, but there are a few things that I would change in my own. One of the major changes I would make would be including more fact based information in regards to nutrition. A lot of her posts are personal experiences or trendy recipes which make her blog entertaining and appealing, but I think it is important to include scientific based evidence on some of the advice she is giving. I believe that reasoning behind the advice would cause for a more dedicated following because people would have absolutely no doubt that the information disclosed is credible.

Overall, Holly Larson’s blog, Grass Roots Nutrition, was a very pleasant read and had many characteristics that I would like to use in my blog posts for this class and if I decide to create a blog of my own in the future. Her blog made me excited to share my ideas with those who would like to hear. I recommend following her blog if you like easy reads and interesting topics about nutrition.
