Performance Nutrition

As a nutrition and kinesiology major I am constantly conflicted on the proper nutrition for my workouts and always find myself changing my diet around and never seem to find one that really works out my workout routine. I am in the gym six to seven days a week and want a diet to keep me interested, not these boring and bland body builder diets of chicken, oatmeal and eggs. When I started going through the blogs I found one called “Performance Nutrition” and immediately found a particular liking to it. The title was exactly what I was looking for, nutrition for performance, not nutrition for bodybuilding.

The design of this blog is nothing special that screams at you to read it, but the headliner of “Performance Nutrition- Translating Nutrition Science into Real Life” caught my eye. Clearly this blog is for people to read that want nutrition tips for exercise and performing. It is not very colorful and enticing, but once you get into the blog posts there are lots of pictures and it is very easy to follow. Everything on the blog is easily accessible with links at the top to all of the important information like, blog posts, contact info, about me, etc. The one thing I found very useful was that instead of having all kinds of clutter, the blog is very simple and directly to the point. When you enter the blog it takes you to the most recent post and you can begin reading right away.

Marie Spano is the author of the blog and she is one of the leading sports nutrition and nutrition communications expert in North America. She blogs about once a month and speaks to the reader informally, addressing the reader as “we” and writing like we’re having a conversation. There are some posts where she writes in a formal manner about some topics where it is more scientific. Overall her writing style is very welcoming and is easy to understand.

The information in the blog is a wide variety ranging from how alcohol affects the muscle growth and science behind the muscle growth process to simple how to eat healthy around the holiday season without packing on the pounds. Most of the blog post includes links to further information and all of the blog posts include references at the bottom. I like how the posts cover such a large range of topics and focus on current issues and current times. Like the holiday eating blog post was in the beginning of December and the snack foods that say they are ‘healthy’ when they really aren’t (a very relevant topic right now).

Overall this blog engages the reader by posting relevant topics and every day issues that people focusing on nutrition to perform want to read. I think she does an awesome job at adding pictures and links to all of the posts and then on top of that makes everything very easy to understand. I can’t wait to keep up with this blog and test some of the different things she posts about.
