The Road to Success…

The Road To Success…

These days there is an abundance of nutritional information available to individuals. This can lead to a lot of confusion especially when one is trying to lose weight. It seems there’s a new fad diet being talked about every year. I truly believe that living a balanced lifestyle when it comes to diet and exercise is the key to success when it comes to one’s health and weight loss. Instead of cutting out an entire food group, why not try eating everything in moderation? We devote much of our time to our careers, family, friends, school, cleaning, and television yet little time to meal preparation and exercise. Skidmore College created a brochure with great nutrition and exercise information pertaining to weight loss.

The simple design attracted me to the brochure. The use earthy colors such as blue, green and brown gave me a feeling of relaxation and well being. There is a good balance between white space and text which makes the brochure a quick and easy read. This also makes the brochure seem less overwhelming which makes people more likely to read it. The photos used were relevant to each topic and added to the brochure’s aesthetics. This brochure is meant to educated people who are trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight on nutrition and exercise. This brochure explains that losing weight takes time and one needs to be patient on this journey. It educates the reader on how to calculate their target weight and compare it to their weight history. This allows the reader to set a realistic weight loss goal. There is a panel devoted to “Food Habits”. This is important because in order to see results one must evaluate their eating habits and make changes where needed. In this Western world we are trained to be as productive as possible. This can lead to mindless eating which leads to overeating. Being mindful while eating and listening to your bodies cues is important. Forming these new habits begins with awareness and this brochure addresses this. There is a panel that discusses food cravings which if you are human you most likely have them. This helps to establish a healthy relationship with these types of foods. It recommends having them in moderation instead of depriving yourself. This is good advice because depriving yourself of the things you crave may lead to binge eating  sessions later on. In terms of weight loss many people tend to reduce their consumption of calories in an extreme way which will likely lead to overeating later on as well. Instead this brochure discusses the importance of eating small meals regularly to promote weight loss. The last panel educates the reader on the importance of exercise and the positive health benefits.

Overall, I think this brochure is useful to those who are trying to lose weight and do not know where to start. I believe it will be effective at reaching this audience due to its simple design and straight forward advice. This brochure corrects misconceptions and raises ones awareness on nutrition and exercise. This plants a seed that will hopefully continue to grow and result in healthy weight loss for overweight individuals.
