Gaining Relevant Experience in Nutrition (part 1)

There are many opportunities to gain experience related to your career goals in nutrition.  This week and next, I’ll be posting some suggestions to help you gain experience in your field.

Do you have an interest in research?  Review the research interests of our nutrition faculty by visiting the Nutritional Science web site. Talk with your instructors in nutrition and other related fields.  Each faculty with research interests lists recent publications and areas of emphasis on their departmental web site.  If this research excites you too, contact them or their lab manager.  Send your resume and explain what interests you about their research. Reading about the various projects prior to contacting faculty will show your inquiries are genuine.  The College of Health and Human Development has several Research Centers. Learn about what they do by visiting the college web site at www.hhdev.psu.edu/clinics

Clinical and Food Service nutrition experiences are frequently available in hospitals and nursing homes in the area.  Mount Nittany Medical Center and HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital have volunteer opportunities for students. Paid positions in the Dietary departments are occasionally available.  There are many nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, assisted living or independent living facilities in the area that often need part-time employees or volunteers to work in their dietary departments. The Fairways at Brookline Village is currently in need of Part-time dietary aides beginning immediately.  Anyone interested is encouraged to send a resume or complete an application, which can be printed from their web site www.brooklinevillage.com or picked up at The Fairways at Brookline.

Next week I’ll discuss ways to gain experience in community/public health nutrition, food service management and general leadership opportunities.
