Camp Hamwi Seeking Student Dietitians for Summer 2014 Diabetes Camp

Looking for a summer experience in Nutrition and enjoy working with children? Consider applying for positions for  Student Dietitian,  Assistant Food Service Director, or for more advanced students, Food Service Director at Camp Hamwi.  The Central Ohio Diabetes Association is now accepting applications for jobs at Camp Hamwi, a residential summer camp for children living with diabetes.  This is a unique summer job opportunity that will give students a chance to work in a variety of settings relevant to their education.

 Each year a multidisciplinary health care team operates Camp Hamwi.  This team includes dietitians, dietetic students, nurses, nursing students, paramedics, physicians, and medical students. Students can benefit from working as part of this specialized medical team no matter where they are in their education.

 As a member of the dietary staff, students can expect to spend 95% of the time working in the kitchen to help prepare and serve meals and snacks.  The remainder of the time is spent teaching nutrition education to campers and assisting in night rounds.  More experienced students are encouraged to apply for the food service director and assistant food service director positions.

The work experience takes place at Camp Hamwi, a diabetes camp that has been in existence for 46 years.  Camp Mohaven is the home base for our camp, which is located in Danville, Ohio.  Camp Hamwi is held exclusively for children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes between the ages of 7 and 17.

Staff orientation for Camp Hamwi 2014 is mandatory and will be held two days, Friday, July 25th and Saturday, July 26th.  Camp Hamwi 2014 will be held July 27thAugust 9th.  Students will receive a weekly stipend of $190, free room and board and $50 compensation for attending the 2-day orientation. The dates for camp are as follows:

            Senior Challenge Week (ages 13-17)                July 27thAugust 2nd

Junior Challenge Week (ages 7-12)                  August 3rdAugust 9th

Interested students should complete an application and gather 3 reference forms.  Reference forms must be sealed in their own envelopes and signed by the person completing the form.  The forms can be found at this website   Application and reference forms should be mailed/ hand delivered together in one envelope, addressed to the attention of Jennifer C.
