1st Student Nutrition Association Meeting Info!

Hello Nutrition Students,

This Tuesday, September 2nd in 10 Henderson the Student Nutrition Association will be having their first meeting. Joining SNA is a great way to get professional development and community outreach experience as well as meet people within the major.

Throughout the year, members of SNA are involved in a wide variety of activities including:

-Peer mentoring

-Nutrition workshops with senior citizens and students with special needs

-Community Outreach

-Volunteering at professional conferences and expos

-Social events like Thanksgiving potluck

Dietetics Option Information Session – Sept 14, 2015 – Mark your Calendars!

Dr. Coleman-Kelly, the Dietetics Program Director, will be having a Dietetics Option information session that offers detailed information about the steps to obtain the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential, the requirements to complete the Dietetics option, information about the Field Experience requirement, and strategies to think about early in your degree program help you be more competitive for a Dietetic Internship.

Job opening: Full-Time Clinical Research Coordinator Position at the University of Pennsylvania

The Center for Weight and Eating Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator. The candidate will help coordinate a NIHfunded study that will examine eating behaviors in 7- to 9-year-old children in a nutrition laboratory. Duties include assisting with recruiting subjects and obtaining their informed consent and assent to participate; coordinating subject screenings and study visits; preparing and administering study meals and taste preference assessments; coordinating regulatory paperwork; documenting and reporting adverse events; completing anthropometric measurements and accompanying participants through study procedures (e.g., DEXA scans); preparing study materials and ordering supplies; ensure protocol adherence & data quality; complete NIH progress and Data Safety Monitoring Plan reports; maintaining study charts; and entering study data.

A Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Health Sciences, or related fields and 1 to 3 years of clinical trial / clinical research experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Effective problem-solving abilities, effective communication and writing skills, ability to multi-task, demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, knowledge of IRB and human research protection regulations desired. Experience working with families and children is strongly desirable. Must be able to work flexible hours. Position contingent on continued funding.

Tuesday (8/25) 9:00-11:30am and 2-4pm

Wednesday (8/26) 1-5pm

2015 Centre County PSU Heart Walk

The American Heart Association will be holding a Heart Walk at Penn State University. The event is to be held Sunday, September 20, 2015 on Penn State Campus at 1pm with registration beginning at noon at Spikes Stadium. This year we are adding both a 5k and 1 mile walk/run option!

The American Heart Association hopes to have more participation this year from the Penn State Community, students, faculty and staff. Student groups and orgs (such as SNA), olease consider participating by creating a team or volunteering.

The goal is to have a team from each Penn State College represented at our Heart Walk! It’s easy to sign up, simply contact Brooke S. Welsh at,  or visit our website .

There is no registration fee and no requirement for fundraising, however, of course we do hope you fundraise to support our mission of supporting heart and stroke survivors in Centre County. We are also looking for student volunteers to help with our KID’S ZONE. We are looking for students to help with face painting, games and heart healthy activities for kids like jump rope and hula hoops.

Summer Study Abroad Programs in Nutrition through Iowa State University

Iowa State University sponsors a number of study abroad opportunities in Nutrition and Food Science that PSU students might be interested in.  Applications to summer programs are typically due in the fall. Most international programs through Penn State and other schools require you to plan nearly a year in advance.  Study abroad programs through Iowa State are based on in-state tuition even if you are an out-of-state student. Job Announcement:  Dietary Aide position at Foxdale Village in State College, PA

We are currently hiring dietary aides to work in our skilled nursing dining rooms at Foxdale Village. Basic responsibilities will revolve around serving high quality meals, paying mind to specific therapeutic and modified textured diets, and maintaining utmost food safety/sanitation practices. Both four hour and eight hour shifts are available. There is a potential to work up to 28 hours/week, if desired. Hours are flexible, and we can work around class schedules. Weekend and holiday availability is preferred. This is a great opportunity that will provide substantial experience, especially for those looking to apply for dietetic internships!
