Speech  Outline

“Black Power,” “LBJ LBJ how many will you kill today?,”  “No Means No,” “Nasty Woman” all of these slogans are from different eras, for different movements, but all had the same impact, they had the power to bring people together. The slogan nasty woman started off as an insult aimed at Hillary Clinton by her opponent Donald Trump but I’m sure as you’ve all noticed it has become something far from an insult. The term or slogan Nasty Woman has come to mean something entirely different to society now. The term nasty woman has become something to people. It has meaning and substance when it is seen, read or heard. The phrase influenced popular culture, books, and magazines as well as came to be known as the rallying cry of women’s rights. The phrase Nasty Woman has rallied the American people behind a cause it has given Americans hope, strength and the ability to come together and fight for their rights.

Paragraph 1:

Medium-Twitter(Commonplace)

  • #NastyWoman
  • Examples how the message originally spread
  • Got the word out
  • Started the trend
  • Gave people something to stand behind
  • The beginning of the movement
  • #Imanastywomanbecause…

Basically I want to get across that twitter rallied the American people behind the cause-main point bullets are how it did this I want to show examples of tweets

Paragraph 2:

Medium-Media (Commonplace)

  • How the media spun the insult
  • News outlets used the term nasty woman
  • Made it into a term that meant women’s rights
  • How they were able to define it with and for society
  • Gave people hope
  • People Magazine called “nasty woman” a “battle cry”
  • Known as the “female empowerment message trump didn’t mean to spread.” (Bustle)

Basically I want to show how the media played a role in shaping people’s definition of the phrase Nasty woman because I feel that the definition or society is choosing to use it is really important and I think the media really played a role in this and I want to show that.

Paragraph 3

Medium-Protest/Women’s March (Commonplace)

  • Rallying Cry
  • Posters
  • T-shirts-proceeds go to planned parenthood
  • Unified people
  • Stood behind a common idea even though there were so many reasons people were at the women’s march]
  • Connect to Kairos

Basically I want to show how the women’s march gave people hope and strength and I can do that by using examples and quotes from people who were there and why they marched. I want to show how the phrase Nasty Woman was like the unified and rallying cry for people even if they were there for different reasons.

Paragraph 4

Nasty Woman Project

  • Book that was written-Voices of the Resistance
  • Website with blogs from various different people
  • Use examples from the website to show not only the diversity of people but diversity of posts

The ideology that Nasty Woman stands for is why/what people are standing behind. I want to try and focus on that in this last paragraph to really define exactly what this ideology is. I want to show what is represents to people and how that ideology is what unified people, gave them hope and strength they needed to fight for their rights.

The phrase Nasty Woman has been seen across many different commonplaces: twitter, the media, the women’s march and it’s even been adopted as a group The Nasty Woman’s project which is basically another medium with which to get the ideology across but this time through writing. The ideology behind Nasty Woman is to unite people, it’s to remind people that even in times of despair we as Americans can and will fight back, it’s a reminder to never give up and fight for one’s dreams, it’s about building an America that’s inclusive, big hearted and full of opportunity. In the words of Hillary Clinton “please never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it” that’s what the phrase Nasty Women is reminding us to do it reminds us that we are stronger together, and that is how we will go forward and enact change.

Compelling Comparisons

The paragraph that I found particularly vivid and compelling was the one where she described her job and how it would always come first, my favorite lines in the paragraph are “the truth was the difference between a studio photographer and a photojournalist was the same as the difference between a political cartoonist and an abstract painter; the only thing the two had in common was the blank page. The jobs entailed different talents and desires.” (84)

In this paragraph, Adario uses 2 metaphors one of them compares a photojournalist and a studio photographer and then she compares that to a political cartoonist and an abstract painter. For me, this metaphor really stuck out because I thought Addario did a really nice job explaining not only why she chose photojournalism as a career when there are so many options for photographers but she does it in a way that’s simple yet creative and it gets the point across in a meaningful and memorable way. I also think that this paragraph does a really compelling job of showing me her passion and showing me how important it was by using another comparison of the surgeon. I love Addario’s use of metaphors because I feel like it really helped connect the audience to her work.

I feel like I could use comparisons to help people understand the Equestrian world better because I feel like if I were to compare my experiences in the equestrian world, and why it means so much to me with things that people understand or know more about I can better reach them and show them my passion like Addario did. I feel like the use of metaphors is also especially powerful and appeals to people’s emotions, so in that sense, it is also a good strategy that I could use to help people better see what makes horses and horse back riding so impactful and important to me.

Passion

Lysney Adario included the story of her Nana’s missed chance at love to emphasize the meaning and advice behind the last line  “And I never wanted to regret the kisses I missed” to the readers. I think her memoir is thematized through this piece of advice that she learned and wants to pass on. Adario wants to show us how to define a passion. Throughout her memoir, she talks about how she missed a lot back home, as well as opportunities for love because she was overseas fulfilling her passion, photojournalism. I think Nana’s story helps Adario show, that her passion is truly her work as a photojournalist because she shows us that she doesn’t regret the missed “kisses” since she was filling the time with her passion. I think this shows the importance of her passion, and how a person should define a passion in their life. I think this story helps Adario show how her passion is her work as a photojournalist.

One way that I was going to thematize my blog on horse back riding was to show what I’ve learned through my different experiences horseback riding and how much riding has shaped me. I also wanted to talk about my journey on the equestrian team at PSU. I could talk about how I got ready for the tryout/the tryout itself to show how my journey began. I think I’m going to end up doing that and a way to thematize my blog would be to show why horseback riding is my passion and why it means so much to me. I feel like a lot of people don’t understand why we (riders) are willing to get up at the crack of dawn and spend hours with our horses so I want to help people understand the sport and why it’s so meaningful and such an important part of my life.
