8″ Oreo Blizzard Cake

Following in the footsteps of last week’s post, this week I am going to be talking about my favorite cake of all time, the Oreo blizzard cake. Ever since I was a kid I only preferred ice cream cake. I never liked frosting or the spongy texture of regular vanilla and chocolate cake mixed with my love for ice cream, put ice cream cake right in my hands. It doesn’t matter if the cake is from Coldstone or Giant or DQ, I love all types of Oreo ice cream cake, but owning a DQ makes ice cream cakes more accessible to me.

There’s just something magical about the Oreo blizzard cake that speaks to my soul. Maybe it’s the combination of the creamy ice cream, the crunchy Oreo pieces, and that delicious fudge swirl running through it all. No matter the reason, whenever I see that iconic Oreo blizzard cake, my mouth starts watering and I can’t resist diving in for a slice (or two). The contrast of textures and flavors is simply irresistible. It’s like a party in my mouth with every spoonful! I may not have a sweet tooth, but I will always have time to indulge in some Oreo ice cream cake.

Dairy Queen’s ice cream cakes are different from their competitors. In the middle of every blizzard cake you will find a layer of cold fudge and crunch filling. The cold fudge is a decadent addition to the cake, adding a rich and thick layer of chocolatey goodness. The cold fudge serves multiple purposes in the cake; it adds a burst of chocolate flavor, creates a contrast to the creamy ice cream, and binds all the layers together.

In the same layer is the crunch base. It is arguably the signature element of any DQ ice cream cake The crunch provides a textural contrast to the smooth ice cream and fudge layers, and adds a depth of flavor in the cake. I know for me, this is the best part of the cake because it tastes good and it pairs perfectly with the rest of the cake. The crunch ensures that every bite is as enjoyable as the last.

The Oreo blizzard cake sets itself apart when its competitors. Even at DQ, the Oreo cakes outsells the PB Cup cake or the Chocolate Brownie Extreme cake. I would say it’s in everyone’s best interest to eat Oreo blizzard cake from any DQ (please come to mine only). Oh, and don’t forget at DQ we can customize your cakes and write any message that you would like. So, next time you drive by a DQ, make sure to stop and order a Oreo Blizzard cake.

  1. I think we can all agree Dairy Queen has some simply incredible cakes on its menu, and you’ve highlighted one of the best. In my opinion, few combos can beat good old-fashioned cookie n’ cream dishes, and if this cake tastes anywhere near how you described it, then I can confidently say it will live in the Cookies and Cream Hall of Fame. I especially love the addition of fudge, as there are few things on this planet I love more than fudge. My only question is, if you had only to get one cake for the rest of your life, how close would this be to the top?

  2. You own a DQ? Where?? I could almost taste the things you were describing in this post wow! That sounds so good. I also really like ice cream cake but I’ve only tried it from a place called carvel where I live in Virginia. I don’t know if that’s a chain all over the U.S or if you’ve ever tried it. My favorite part of ice cream cakes is the frosting that usually comes on it is really good. I will plan to try this oreo blizzard cake it sounds awesome.

  3. You and my girlfriend would make such good friends! You both work at ice cream shops, and you both are very passionate about it. Although she works at our local Meadows, not Dairy Queen. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been to Meadows; it’s a little more local, but they have chains scattered around, but I LOVE their custard, and they have a similar-style ice cream cake which we always get for birthdays. Free custard because my girlfriend works there is also a big plus!

  4. The oreo blizzard cake from your description seems like a pretty awesome cake. I personally am not a huge fan of cookies and cream/oreo ice cream as a flavor, but the way you describe it makes me reconsider my opinion. Maybe I’ll have to give it a shot someday and be surprised. For the past couple of blog posts, I have wondered what your favorite ice cream at DQ is. It seems that you are very knowledgeable about it, due to your connection with DQ, so surely you have a strong opinion.

  5. I can still remember eating an ice cream cake for one of my birthdays when I was younger, and these types of cakes definitely stand out from regular cakes because of their uniqueness. I find it interesting that DQ developed their own spin on ice cream cakes by adding fudge and crunch filling. Do you believe that some of the reason this cake has had such an impact on you is because of the special additions (like fudge and crunch filling) that DQ offers in comparison to other more basic ice cream cakes?

  6. Ice cream cake is always delicious. My sister always chooses this for her birthday cake, so this blog makes me think of her birthday. I would agree the contrast of tastes and flavors definitely adds to ice cream cake. Oreo ice cream cake is definitely a top tier flavor as cookies and cream ice cream is my favorite flavor. I have a sweet tooth and the nice fudge topping is another delicious add to such a cold dessert.
