Background
The Pennsylvania Newspaper Project (PaNP) was an early participant in the United States Newspaper Program (USNP), 1985 – 1990. The USNP was a cooperative national effort to inventory, catalog and preserve through microfilming the newspaper heritage of the United States from the 18th century to the present. Individual states submitted grant applications to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to participate in the UNSP. Project funding was provided by the NEH while technical assistance was supplied by the Library of Congress. Pennsylvania submitted its first NEH USNP grant application, a planning grant, in June 1984 and was awarded funds to begin the systematic cataloging work throughout the Commonwealth in October 1985. Two subsequent NEH grants were received to continue cataloging in all 67 counties and to fund the microfilming phase of the Project. The statewide Pennsylvania Newspaper Project ended in 1990.
