Meeting Minutes – 1/19/16

Hey Kids, if you weren’t at the outing club meeting last night, you totally missed out! We had two awesome guest speakers and some other cool upcoming events to announce. Read this email to catchup on what you missed.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Dave Gantz – “Gantz” is an extremely experienced backpacker, who has completed the Appalachian Trail multiple times, along with other famous trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail, Vermont Long Trail, and more. He provided us with a detailed description of what kind of logistics and planning go into long-distance hikes, and important information about how to stay safe on the trail and pack lightly without breaking the bank. Drew Lehnerd – the assistant director of penn state’s AURORA program came to talk about job opportunities available to students. AURORA includes several different new student orientation programs, including ORION (backpacking orientation for incoming freshmen) and URSA (urban community service experience for incoming freshmen). They are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated leaders to participate in this rewarding way to earn at least $400 a week while providing new students with an unforgettable introduction to their new lives at Penn State. Kayak Pool Sessions – 1/20, 7:30-10:30pm – Spots remain for this semester’s first pool session tonight! Give Aaron Fleishman $5 to be sign up and receive professional whitewater kayaking instruction. Gear is provided, and if you have your own gear feel free to just show up (with $5). All experience levels welcome. Email ajf200@psu.edu for more info. Frostbite Climbnasium Bouldering Competition – 2/27 – Pat Thornton is organizing a group to go compete at this climbing and bouldering competition at the Climbnasium in Mechanicsburg, PA. Email him at pmt5086@psu.edu, they will be practicing at the state college YMCA every Thursday night. All experience levels are welcome!

THON

2016 Dance Marathon – 2/19-21 – Outing Club Thon has selected Taylor Bell and Emily Donahue to represent our organization in this year’s 46-hour dance marathon. Come on out to the BJC and join us in the stands to cheer them on as they dance for the kids and for a cure!

Parachord bracelets sale – 2/26 – We will be selling woven parachord bracelets for $5 each at the next PSOC meeting, all proceed directly benefit THON and the Four Diamonds Fund. Whether you want to make a stylish statement or just want to have some rope on hand in case of an emergency, be sure to pick up one, or a dozen!

PSOC Logo Contest – ends 1/22 – Now is your last chance to submit your take on the new PSOC logo to be used on t shirts, stickers, and more. Feel free to submit notebook doodles, 30 second sketches, vague ideas, we’re open to anything. Send submissions to psoc-officers@googlegroups.com

Fourty-Four Mile Fall Foliage Foto Funtest – Next meeting we will announce the winners of our fall photography contest, and we’ll be making announcements for our winter photo contest!

Membership

If you want to become an official member, please come to the next meeting with a completed participation agreement (in pen), and club dues in cash ($30 for year, $20 for one semester). All members must have health insurance, but are no longer required to provide proof.

Safety Officers

– Provide scanned copies of your certifications for CPR/AED and First Aid. Certifications a! r! e only accepted from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association! and the Emergency Care and Safety Institute.

– Complete Safety Officer Form

 

Drivers

– Complete Vehicle Authorization Form

– Submit and print the Vehicle Authorization Form and have it signed by the vehicle owner (whoever’s name is on the registration)

– Provide scanned copies of your up-to-date Vehicle Registration, Auto Insurance, and Driver’s License
