There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in our ocean & 46,000 pieces in every square mile of ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tons. Imagine your house trashed and pieces of garbage thrown all over. Plastic in the ocean has been a well-known issue for years now, but humans do not seem to care at all about reversing this issue and saving the marine life that is being affected by it.
Plastic in the ocean is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, and many animals, like the penguin seen in the World Wildlife Fund advertisement above, are slowly making their way towards extinction. If we do not act fast and use more resources to attempt to clean up our oceans, many different marine animals will be replaced by plastics. These animals do not deserve to choke on plastics that we throw into their home, and we must do everything possible to stop this from happening.
This issue fits best with the lens of ethical literacy, as it is built around an ethical problem in our society today. This artifact also builds into the United Nation’s seventeen sustainable development goals, most notably the goal of protecting Life Below Water. Life below water plays a crucial role in our planet, and our entire planet would struggle if these animals were to become extinct.
In situations like these, you must step back and ask yourself, “What could I be doing to help that situation?” or, “How can I make others realize this is an important issue?” Like I said before, if you would not want to be living in filth, why should these animals be forced to? Thank you.
Hi Owen! I love your use of hypothetical situations (but also kind of real since the Earth is our home too!) to really drive your argument. Your use of numbers always emphasizes how big of an issue this is. It’s definitely not a “worry about it later” kind of problem…the later is now. Great job formulating your ideas!
Hey Owen, very nice pitch idea! I thoroughly enjoyed your precise use of numbers and clear language which gives this issue the emphasis that it deserves. Your hook was a great way to engage the audience, as no one wants to picture their home flooded with garbage. I noted your response to the SDG of “life below the water” as well as the lens of ethical literacy. I would expound a bit more on how this artifact exposes ethical literacy, but overall thoroughly enjoyed this pitch!
Nice pitch! I really like how you used situations that could resonate personally with the audience in your opening. I also like how you directly stated which lens responds to your pitch. Overall, I thought you did a great job of writing this and was well executed.
Great Pitch! I really like your artifact and all the visual interest it brings. The pathos that you yourself brought in was interesting when you said “These animals do not deserve to choke on plastics that we throw into their home, and we must do everything possible to stop this from happening.” and it really brings the problem to the audiences everyday life. Great job and I can’t wait to hear your speech!
Speech review: I thought you did a great job with your speech today and thought you did a great job connecting with your audience. I think the visual was great and agree with all the feedback given. I would say that you should work on the way which you connect with your audience. Instead of talking down to them, meet them where they are at and connect with them as a fellow human. Don’t be afraid to point out your own flaws to curate a sense of commodity with your audience. Great job today and I am looking forward to your speech!
I thought you did a great job at delivering your speech. I thoroughly enjoyed how you kept referring back to the image to keep your audience engaged. Overall I thought you did a good job and found your pitch to be informative.
I thought that this speech was full of energy and truly spoke to the audience using facts, numbers, and enthusiasm. You had my attention right off the bat and I noticed that your hand gestures and eye contact around the room promoted audience engagement. I think if you focus on the artifact a bit more, especially analyzing distinct features (color, shape, setting) of the artifact, this speech will be hard to beat, good job!
