Photo-Activated Adhesive Work-holding (PAAW) is a new technology that was developed at Penn State University to fixture “difficult-to-hold” parts for tight tolerance, manufacturing processes. The E-Guide: PAAW Concept Description, History, and Case Studies provides a comprehensive overview of the technology, its technical benefits, and the general characteristics (nonproprietary) of the applications for which it is currently being used. It then provides a brief history of its development and commercialization. Lastly it describes three PAAW applications that are currently in the public domain. One application is carried out at Precision Grinding & Manufacturing . It involves the use of a hybrid PAAW fixture for holding a magnesium casting for machining. The other two applications are used for in-house machining of aluminum and stainless steel components at Penn State University. The applications are very diverse with regard to the technology used as well as approach.
The E-Guide: PAAW Technology and Practice describes the equipment necessary for its implementation, including available vendors. It is not intended to be a sales tool. Instead it simply describes the equipment currently use in industry and discusses their relative advantages and disadvantages. It also discusses all relevant facts that should be weighed when choosing equipment for a PAAW application. It then describes current “Best Practices” used by industry. It is the hard earned wisdom of PAAW end users, developers, and technology suppliers over the past ten years.
The E-Guide: PAAW Engineering Science and Data provides a deeper technical description of the adhesive photo-curing process and the process variables that affect it. It also describes important end use properties of cured adhesive joints. Finally it provides a description of the behavior of these adhesive joints under loading as well as common failure modes.
The first E-Guide is recommended for anyone wishing to obtain a better understanding of the technology and the rationale behind its use. The second E-Guide is recommended for an end user planning the acquisition of equipment for a PAAW application. It is also recommended for fixture designers and process engineers responsible for implementing a PAAW solution. The third E-Guide is recommended for experienced technology implementers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the technology for the purpose of optimizing their applications.
