Activity: iPad Basics

This activity will provide you with experience in using the classroom iPads to accomplish some of the basic tasks in this course. At the end of this activity, you will…

  • Be able to log into the iPad.
  • Be able to connect the iPad to a provided Bluetooth keyboard.
  • Be familiar with the classroom-specific applications available to you on the iPad, specifically:
    • Canvas
    • Google Chrome
    • Pages
  • Be able to construct documents, take photos and shoot video with the iPad.
  • Be able to connect the iPad to the Apple TV at the collaboration stations.

The Assignment

Using an iPad is generally considered so easy for users that no instructions are provided; the interface is considered intuitive enough for anyone to learn. However, sometimes a brief introduction to Apple technology can be helpful, especially for Android users.

In this assignment you will gain some experience with the iPad.  Using the iPad and Bluetooth keyboard provided by the instructor, you will perform a series of operations designed to familiarize you with the iPad and some of the tools we will be using in this course. At the end of this tutorial, you will submit a few files which show that you are proficient with the iPads.

Step #1: Logging into the iPad

When you open the iPad, you will see a screen similar to the following:

home_screen

Press the “Home” button. This will cause a “Passcode” screen to appear:

passcode

Enter the passcode identified by your instructor and hit the “Done” button on the virtual keyboard. you should now be logged into the iPad! Please note that this password will work for all the classroom iPads.

Step #2: Connecting a Bluetooth Keyboard to the iPad

You have been given a wireless keyboard to connect to your iPad. This keyboard uses Bluetooth technology, a wireless protocol for connecting devices at short range.  To begin this process, tap the “Settings” app:

settings

Next, select “Bluetooth” from the right-hand list. On the left, if the slider for “Bluetooth” is in the “off” position, use your finger to slide it “on”:

You are now ready to connect your keyboard. Turn the keyboard on, using the switch on the right-hand side of the device (the switch must be in the “down” position):

A blue and green light will briefly glow on the top of the keyboard. Next, you need to make your device “discoverable”. Press and hold the Fn key on the keyboard, and at the same time, press the Z key:

At this point, the device should show up in your Bluetooth list as Anker A7721:

Tap the Anker A7721 box on the iPad, and the message should change to say “Connected”:

At this point, you can use your keyboard for all typing! If you prefer using the stylus and the virtual keyboard, you may disconnect the keyboard by tapping the Anker A7721 box.

Step #3: Taking a Photo and Shooting Video on the iPad

Your iPad has both front-facing and rear-facing cameras which allow you take pictures. Complete the tutorial from WikiHow on Taking Photos and Video using your iPad. Only do Part 1 of the tutorial (Steps 1-8), make sure you take a selfie, and film a brief video of yourself saying hello to the class.

Step #4: Finding an App on the iPad

The next few steps ask you to open some of the iPad apps. Using your finger, you can swipe left or right to see the various sets of apps available to you on the iPad. By default, most of the “basic” apps will appear on the “home screen” you see once you are logged in:

main

If you swipe right on the “home” screen, you will be taken to a “Search” page whereby you can enter the name of an app you are looking for. Tapping in the “Search” bar allows you to type the name of the app. If this app is on the iPad, it will show it to you below the search bar like so:

search

At this point, you could tap the icon to launch the app. Keep this in mind as we move forward.

Step #5: Using Google Chrome on the iPad

Although the iPad provides the “Safari” app for Web browsing, it is recommended that you use the “Google Chrome” app for Web browsing on these iPads. To launch the “Google Chrome” app, tap the following icon:

chrome

Enter a few URLs to get a feel for using the app; http://www.psu.edu is a simple one to try.

Step #6: Creating a Simple Document

The iPad provides the “Pages” app for constructing text documents, in a similar fashion to Microsoft Word. To access “Pages”, tap the following icon:

pages

The “Pages” app will now launch:

Pages1

In the blank document which appears, type a brief description of yourself which includes your name, where you are from, and what you hope to get out of the class. Use somewhere between 30-50 words. Give your entry a bold title (your name, perhaps?).

The document saves automatically, but you need to rename the document. For the document name, use your name, course, and semester; for example, Stone-CMPSC101-Fall-2016. To rename the document, tap the “Documents” option in the upper-left hand corner of the “Pages” window:

Pages11

This will take you to a screen listing any and all “Pages” documents on the iPad. Your document, by default, is named Blank:

Pages2

To rename the document, tap the word Blank. This will present a text entry box in which you can type the document name. When you are done, simply tap somewhere else on the screen:

Pages3

You may now exit the “Pages” app.

Step #7: Connecting the iPad to the Apple TV

The iPad can project itself onto a television monitor, Smartboard, or other display device by using Apple TV. During this course, we will be using an Apple TV at the collaboration stations. Once again, Bluetooth will be our connection method.

Travel to the collaboration station indicated by the instructor. Once there, swipe up from the bottom of your iPad screen. A menu will appear; look for the item marked “AirPlay Mirroring” and tap it:

A list of devices will appear with which you can connect. Tap the one which says “C107AT”.  Wait a few seconds, and your iPad screen should display on the monitor(s) at the collaboration station.

Once the instructor has verified your success, you can disconnect the iPad from the Apple TV. Once again, swipe up from the bottom of your iPad screen. A menu will appear; look for the item marked “C107AT” (where the “AirPlay” was previously) and tap it.  When the list of devices appears, tap the option which says “Turn Off AirPlay Mirroring”.  Your iPad screen should no longer appear on the monitor(s).

Step #8: Using Canvas on the iPad

Penn State’s Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, is also available on the iPads. To launch the “Canvas” app, tap the following icon::

canvas

When prompted for your school, type in Penn State, and tap the arrow key. It should then take you to the Penn State login page, from which you can enter your Access ID and password. Once you are logged in, verify that you can see your courses.

Enter the course and bring up the Lesson 01 module. Look for the iPad Basics assignment. Tap the assignment, and then use the How do I submit Assignments in the Canvas app on my iOS device? tutorial to submit three file uploads in one (1) submission:

  • Your selfie image
  • Your brief video
  • Your Pages document

Once you are done submitting the files on Canvas, you may log out and exit the app. Close the iPad, replace the stylus, and return all devices to the instructor.
