The Grand Canyon first received federal protection in the year 1893 when it was designated a forest reserve by the federal government. Years later, and three years after the founding of the National Park Service, the Grand Canyon was given national park status in 1919. Today the park receives around five million visitors each year, being in of Americas most popular parks.

If you are interested in paying the canyon a visit, you will want to consult the National Park Service’s website for basic information regarding the park. You will find that the South Rim of the canyon is open all year twenty four hours a day; however, the North Rim is only open seasonally, opening May fifteenth and closing October fifteenth each year. Paying attention to detail is important while planning. Given that the park is over 1,900 square miles in area, and that a massive canyon divides it, miscalculating your destination can mean hours wasted on extra driving that you could be spending in the park.

A unique and exhilarating attraction that visitors can experience is the skyglass bridge that shoots out over the canyon. If you are afraid of heights (as I am), this overlook may make you a bit uneasy, but I think that it is definitely worth experiencing. If you are interested in testing out your bravery, consider stopping by this attraction and experiencing a one of a kind sensation and view.

If you are an avid outdoors lover, and have experience with hiking, you might consider planning a trek down into the canyon itself. It is important that if you do decide to embark on such an adventure, that you make sure that you have taken the time to learn about safety precautions and procedures and that you are equipped well enough to set off on this journey. The park service reports that often times people underestimate the sheer size of the park and end up getting stranded in the canyon with inadequate supplies. Perhaps most urgent is ensuring that you have enough water. With extremely high daytime temperatures, dehydration can be a major risk when hiking. Make sure that if you decide to take this adventure, that you are adequately prepared and are aware f potential risks and dangers.

The Grand Canyon has far more to offer than I could ever begin to describe in a single blog post. No matter what you like, the canyon likely has something for you. The park offers amazing opportunities for adventure such as hiking, backpacking, river rafting trips and camping. However, if you are not as interested in more adventurous trips, simply traveling to the park to see the sights is an equally worthwhile endeavor. The Grand Canyon is an American Classic, if you haven’t already, you ought to consider adding her to your bucket list.

  1. I love the premise behind this blog and I especially enjoyed reading about the Grand Canyon. My dad is an avid hiker and outdoorsman, so he loves visiting national parks and seeing nature. He has seen the Grand Canyon and wants to bring my sister and I to visit it and hike around. The closest we got was when we visited Hawaii last year and saw Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It was absolutely gorgeous, so I imagine the Grand Canyon is just as impressive. One day I hope to visit, so hearing all of these tips for visiting was very informative. I can’t wait to go back and read the rest of your posts to hear about even more national parks that I can hopefully visit one day.

  2. It is always so interesting to hear your take on the national parks. I remember standing at the edge of the canyon myself and being astounded by the size of it. It is breathtaking and unlike anything else I know, so definitely a bucket list item, just as you said. Plus, with all the different activities for tourists to choose from, your level of endurance does not matter. Anyone can truly enjoy this national park without so much effort and no one is left out from enjoying it. Also, I giggled quite a bit about your comment on driving on the wrong side of the canyon; it really isn’t easy to cross!
