Ah..a Wong Kar Wai film, a world renowned film director and creator of many cult faves like his 1995 masterpiece Fallen Angels. If you enjoy the occult; violence, drama, sex, desire etc. this movie is for you. If you enjoy a movie that explores the Nightlife in Hong Kong and gives you some insight on a subculture this film is for you. If you want a film that is able to blend those two themes together and make a complex interconnection between the nightlife and the characters we follow throughout the story, this film is for you.
I usually do not rate movies 10/10 unless they are stellar, I mean show stopping award winning,my life and/or my perspective around life has changed. Fallen Angels, Moonlight, Train To Busan, and Prince Of Egypt. I’ve watched, dissected, re watched and analyzed so many films, none of them come close to these films. What they all have in common is they have an amazing soundtrack, great visuals, touching and complex plots.
Fallen Angels accomplishes this and is able to provide insight on a subculture within a place most westerners no nothing about, so this film opened my eyes and broadened my perspective a bit. Fallen Angel’s dizzying, ethereal yet real and grounded visuals, Hong Kong nightlife, and complex interpersonal relationships within this nightlife with and amazing soundtrack who wouldn’t love this move?
Look at that, I mean who wouldn’t want to watch after that? But, besides the outstanding visuals that feel like it actually creates a world around it, the characters are my favorite. I would go into depth, but I refuse to rob anyone of experiencing this, but what I will say is the communication between the characters is usually non verbal. This is what truly sets this movie apart for me, because of the nature of these people and the nature of their jobs they do not interact with people much. But, when they are seen interacting with people its usually another character in the story. One character is mute and does not speak sign language so he has to talk through his actions, making understanding him extremely difficult. He only has his father with him his few friends who are the only people who understands him. This story explores the life of the misunderstood outcast “ugly” face of society and delves into how these people who never felt understood finally finds understanding, loses it and for it to never come back. For a story that has violence, sex, drugs, and explores nightlife, these people are completely human, their relationships have a level of intimacy and understanding most relationships lack.
Fallen Angels with its dizzying visuals, its strange dark yet fitting soundtrack, its gorgeous casts full of individuals, its complex plot, its underlying themes of humanity, its intimacy and its phenomenal world building makes it a 10/10 f0r me and I highly encourage everyone to watch it, with an open mind of course.
