From Harry Potter to UN Ambassador

If you’ve watched any of the eight Harry Potter films, you’d recognize her.

 

 

Emma Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France. Both of her parents, Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, were lawyers. For the first five years of her life, she lived in Paris, but after her parents’ divorce, she moved with her mother and brother Alex to England.

From an early age, Emma Watson knew she wanted to be an actress. She studied at the Stagecoach Theatre Arts school at Oxford, and practiced singing, acting, and dancing, as well as performed in their school plays.

 

 

When Watson was nine, one of her theater teachers recommended to her and her agents that she audition for an upcoming movie. In case you can’t tell where this sentence is going, the audition her teacher was referring to was for the movie Harry Potter. Emma Watson auditioned eight times and was finally cast after she impressed the author of the book, J.K. Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (the first of the series) earned $33.3 million on its opening day in the US which eventually grossed to $975 million in the world, and was nominated for seven BAFTA Awards and three Academy Awards. Watson continued to play an integral role in the series for the duration of the films while continuing her education.

 

 

For just the Harry Potter series, Watson has won several individual awards. In 2002, she won the Young Artist Award for ‘Best Performance in a Feature Film’, in 2007, the ITV National Film Award for ‘Best Female Performance’, three Teen Choice Awards in 2011 along with the “San Diego Films Critics Society Award. In 2010, Emma Watson was recognized as ‘Hollywood’s highest paid female star’ due to the $19 million dollars she made.

Along with her most famous work in Harry Potter, Watson was also cast in Beauty And the Beast, The Circle, Noah, This is the End, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The Tale of Despereaux.

 

 

In 2009, Watson enrolled for her freshmen year at Brown University, where she majored in English. Although she did defer for one year to finish the last Harry Potter film, she graduated in 2014, the same year in which she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

As a Global Ambassador, Watson has focused on female empowerment and gender equality. Women Goodwill Ambassadors are tasked with raising awareness to issues that impact women throughout the world. In 2016, Emma traveled to Malawi, Africa, to discuss the outlaw of child marriage with chiefs and girls there that had been married as children.

Watson designed her own fashion line through People Tree, a fair-trade fashion brand that designs eco-friendly clothing. Her line raised awareness of the fashion industry’s negative impact on the environment as it is a large contributor to pollution.

 

 

In 2014 Emma Watson was invited to speak at the UN and she became the face of the UN Women’s He For She campaign. During her speech, she encouraged the promotion of feminism and rejection of the concept of man-hating. She continuously advocates for gender equality and has further promoted the need for both men and women to pursue gender equality as it is a prominent issue. Watson has also shown her support for the Times’s Up and Me Too movements.

Emma Watson inspires millions of people throughout the world and is a strong advocate for social issues she finds important. Though most famously known for her work in Harry Potter, she used this platform to promote gender equality, education, fair trade, and environmental action among other issues. Emma Watson once said, ““I’m willing to be seen. I’m willing to speak up. I’m willing to keep going. I’m willing to listen to what others have to say. I’m willing to go to bed each night at peace with myself. I’m willing to be my biggest bestest most powerful self.”

  1. I really like this blog because despite growing up and watching Emma Watson, I knew very little about her adult life. It is great to see people taking their influence and putting it to good use by motivating others to take a step in a positive direction.
