Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, NY, on July 24, 1969. Both of her parents were from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Her parents, Lupe Lopez and David Lopez had met in New York City, and they had three children, Leslie, Jennifer, and Lynda. As a child, she also dreamed of becoming famous. She performed in musicals, and when she was 16, she landed her first small role in My Little Girl. When she was 16 years old, she was cast as a dancer on the comedy show In Living Color in 1990.
In the mid-1990s Jennifer Lopez started appearing in films with famous actors like Robin Williams and Jack Nicholson. Her big movie break occurred when she starred in the movie Selena in 1997. She went on to grab the lead roles in the movies, Anaconda, U Turn, The Cell, The Wedding Planner, and Angel Eyes in the 90s and early 2000s.
In June, 1999, Lopez released her debut music album, On the 6, which went platinum two weeks after it was released. This album made Lopez one of the most influential Latin musician of the time. In 2000, Lopez was nominated for Best Dance Performance for one of her hits, “Waiting For Tonight”. In 2001, she released her second album, J. Lo, which made No. 1 on the pop charts. In 2002, she released her record, This Is Me, then in the same year starred in the hit movie, Maid in Manhattan.
Lopez married Cris Judd, a fellow dancer in her single “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” in September of 2001. Nine months later, they separated. In June, 2004, she remarried to the singer Marc Anthony. They starred together in 2006 in the film El Cantante. In 2007, Jennifer Lopez released her first Spanish album, Como Ama una Mujer, which also did very well on both the pop and Latin charts.
On February 22, 2008, Lopez gave birth to twins, Emme and Maximilian. In 2011, she announced her plans to separate with Marc Anthony. Fast forward a few years to 2017, when People magazines reported spotting Jennifer Lopez and former Yankee baseball star Alex Rodriguez together and dating. In March 2019, they became engaged.
Jennifer Lopez was involved in many other projects throughout her career. In 2010, she replaced Ellen DeGeneres as the new female judge on the 10th season of American idol. She continued judging for the 11thseason, but in 2012 announced her departure. However, she did return for the 13th season in 2014. She released her third album, A.K.A. in 2014 and collaborated with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte on their song “We Are One” for the soccer World Cup. In 2016, she became an executive producer for the show World of Dance. In 2018, she released another singe, “Us”, in February, and in the spring, she released two more, “Dinero” and “El Anillo”. She finished the year with releasing her track “Limitless” and returned to the big screen to star in the movie Second Act.
Most recently, Jennifer Lopez is regarded for starring and directing in the movie Hustlers, which received a variety of award nominations, including a Golden Globe. She ended 2019 with making an estimated $43 million, according to Forbes. She also performed in the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show alongside Shakira, which was seen as a victory for Latino pop music and culture.
JLo faced many challenges during her career and she paved the way for several other Latino and musicians of color. With her success as a musician, dancer, and actress, she inspires many people to also pursue their dreams. Jennifer Lopez once said, “Confidence- It all has to do with how you feel about yourself- it’s about projecting the attitude I’m happy with who I am.”

Well done Lauren. As both a minority through gender and race, JLO was able to push through segregation and make one of the largest names for herself in pop culture. That halftime show was soooo hype, also hope you’re enjoying quarantine
