Great Debate: Is liberalizing international trade essential to achieving prosperity? ~ April 13, 7:00 p.m., Eisenhower Auditorium

Economic theory tells us that trade produces both winners and losers, and that the winners win more than the losers lose. But this doesn’t mean freer trade always makes a country better off—and in the context of our complex, globalized world, far from it.

This year’s Great Debate will explore the consequences of freer trade. Two teams, led by Professor Knapp and by Professor McLeod, will debate the question, “Is liberalizing international trade essential to achieving prosperity?” At the end of the debate, the audience will vote on a winning team. We hope you will join us for this exciting event!

March for Science in Washington, D.C. ~ Earth Day, April 22

The Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council invites all student in the College of the Liberal Arts to join us for a trip to the March for Science in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, April 22. All travel expenses (not including food) for LA students are being covered by the College of the Liberal Arts, with the exception of a $5 security deposit. Please pay cash ahead of time, and the deposit will be returned to you upon departure from State College. Refunds will be granted up until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. Buses leave State College at 5:00 a.m. on the morning of, and leave D.C. at 6:00 p.m. on the same day. RSVP by April 19 by email to PSULAUC@GMAIL.COM.

Paterno Fellows Graduation Ceremony and Reception ~ May 6 at Noon

We will be honoring all Class of 2017 Paterno Fellows at a special ceremony and reception at noon on Saturday, May 6, on the Sparks Building Lawn. We look forward to seeing you, your family, and your friends there! A separate invitation to the event is forthcoming. Save the date!  Graduating Paterno Fellows should fill out the survey by April 12 so we have detailed bio info for the ceremony program.

Best Thesis Awards

Paterno Fellow Best Thesis Awards, Due April 12

The Paterno Fellows Program will present two Best Thesis Awards:  one for a thesis in the social sciences and the other for a thesis in any field of the humanities.  Each prize carries a $500 award and the students will be recognized at the PFP Graduation Ceremony at noon on May 6.  A faculty panel will make the selections based on the originality of the project, the rigor of the research, and the clarity of presentation.  Students must have met all PFP graduation requirements to be eligible.  (If you are not sure of your student’s PFP status, please inquire!)

To nominate a thesis, or to self-nominate, please send the following in an email to PaternoFellows@psu.edu by Wednesday, April 12:

*the senior thesis in pdf format
*two faculty recommendation forms, with memos
*one from an honors adviser
*one from the thesis adviser

These documents may come in one email or in separate emails from the student and faculty reviewers.  Students who self-nominate are responsible for requesting input from the two faculty advisers.

Courses / Curriculum

PFP Ethics Course Requirement

Students must complete 3 credits in ethics (one 3-credit course, or a series of 1- or 2-credit courses) from this approved list of University offerings. Students may choose from a variety of courses in several liberal arts disciplines. Students who wish to propose another course for consideration should write to the Director, Donna Bahry. Please include a syllabus if you have one.

PFP Requirement:  ENGL 397 (1.5 cr) E-Portfolio Writing and Design

This is a web-based course for 5th semester students and above to develop and refine their college e-portfolios. This course includes considerations of platform selection, audience analysis, arrangement strategies, and portfolio writing style.

All students who aspired or were admitted in 2014-15 or after are required to complete this e-Portfolio course in order to graduate as a Paterno Fellow.  ENGL 397 builds on the e-Portfolio you started in RCL (ENGL/CAS 137/138), enhancing it for practical use for graduate school or job applications upon graduation.  Your RCL e-Portfolio does not meet the PFP requirement without the addition of ENGL 397.

Students who aspired or were admitted prior to 2014-15 may take ENGL 397, and may use it as an option for the Global Awareness requirement (previously “Communication”) if it will not be met through foreign language or International Cultures credits.

LA 202 Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Liberal Arts

How many courses provide students with an opportunity to work together to write a book?  Or start an organization?  Students who enroll in LA 202: Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Liberal Arts will get the opportunity to do both.  For details…

ENGL 302 Critical Medical Humanities ~ new ethics course

This course will be of interest to those students who wish to look at relations between human narratives and human health, broadly defined. As opposed to the medical humanities, which center on the representation of health conditions in fiction and other forms of narrative, the critical medical humanities seek to analyze the actual categories of health and wellness and who determines them.  For example, our approach will not assume that biomedicine is objective and holds all the answers. Nor shall we approach human health in isolation form human environments, ‘natural’, political, and socio-economic. — See the full description on LionPATH.

Apply for Summer 2017 Enrichment Funding

Submit your application for enrichment funds if you need support for a summer 2017 internship, research, or global experience. Priority deadline for the summer is May 1, 2017. Final applications deadline is June 1, 2017.

Service / Leadership

PFP Service / Leadership Requirement

Fellows are expected to take on a leadership role or offer volunteer services to a community of their choice totaling at least 50 hours during their college career.  Participants in the Presidential Leadership Academy automatically meet this requirement. To document a leadership or service experience, download the Leadership or Service Documentation Form; complete and submit it using the contact information on the form.  Hours may be reported as they are completed for short-term projects, or after the minimum time is met for long-term experiences.

Watershed Clean Up Day, Saturday, April 22, 8:00 a.m.–noon (Earth Day!)

On April 22, individuals, families and groups will descend on sites throughout Centre County’s watersheds to clean up trash and litter. Please pitch in alongside your neighbors this year and help keep Centre County beautiful. Trash to Treasure / United Way Event Seeking Volunteers

The 2017 Trash to Treasure sale will be held Saturday, June 3 at Beaver Stadium. We need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to help us prepare for the Trash to Treasure sale—and to assist us on sale day. It’s a great way to help out a good cause.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Some of the items you’ll be handling may be dirty. Please dress accordingly. Please arrive promptly for your shift. Updating your Information in the Paterno Fellows Database

As you complete your Paterno Fellows requirements, you are responsible for marking them “Claimed Satisfied” in the PFP database.  You should update the requirements you’ve met as you complete them. Please do not wait until your graduation semester. We need time to approve your submissions and mark them “Satisfied.” For further instructions, see the PFP website.

PFP Student Programming Grants

Paterno Fellows are encouraged to apply for Programming Grants for One-Time Events or Sustained Discussion / Reading Groups.  Successful applications will enhance students’ education, ignite an interest, or make students consider a topic more deeply.  For details, see: pfp-student-programming-grants/
