The Great Debate: “Should we strengthen or relax immigration laws?”

The Penn State University Economics Association (PSUEA) is proud to host our annual “Great Debate.” This year two teams led by professors Austin Boyle and Mark McLeod will be debating on the topic “The American Melting Pot vs. Trump’s Wall.” This event is open to anyone who is interested in seeing how economics impacts modern debates. Other LA Graduation Events: The College of the Liberal Arts Commencement Ceremony is on Saturday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. The College holds separate ceremonies and receptions throughout the day on Saturday for departments to celebrate their students’ achievements. Undergraduate Spring Research Conference Hosted by PSI CHI, April 12

CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE: MARCH 23

Want to build your resume while you snack on free food? Want to make yourself look more appealing to employers, grad schools, law schools, med schools, or dental schools without having to travel? Participate in the annual spring research conference. Come and present your thesis, other conceptual work (no data/analysis needed), or empirical work (data/analysis required). There will be several awards for top presenters. Any social sciences research is welcomed. Applications are available on the psi chi website: https://sites.psu.edu/psichi/. Ethics Courses

Check our website for courses you can take to meet the PFP Ethics requirement. New courses are added as departments alert us of their offerings, or as students bring them to our attention. Students must complete 3 credits in ethics (one 3-credit course, or a series of 1- or 2-credit courses) before graduation.

Call for Applications: Rock Ethics Institute Thesis and Research Awards

Proposal Deadline: March 30, 2018

The Rock Ethics Institute is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2018-2019 Thesis and Research Awards offered in conjunction with the Paterno Fellows Program. These awards are for undergraduate students in the Paterno Fellows Program who are working on ethics-related topics and research either within or in preparation for their honors theses. The Rock Ethics Institute Award will provide a range of financial support (from $500 to $2,000) for thesis research and related activities. For more information and to apply, please visit this link.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program Applications Open

What does it cover?  One year of funding to conduct a research project or independent study, pursue a Master’s degree, or serve as an English teaching assistant.

Where does it apply?  Worldwide.

Who should apply?  This opportunity is open to graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students from who are U.S. citizens. All fields are eligible.

When should I apply? The internal deadline for Research/Study Grants is August 24th. The internal deadline for English Teaching Assistantships is August 31st.

Volunteer for Beaver Stadium Run ~ April 22

The Paterno Family Beaver Stadium Run is a 5K run and family fun walk that supports Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Each year, Paterno Fellows volunteer in many different ways to help this event succeed. Some people aid in preparations in the months leading up to the events while others offer their services for race day only. Straight Talks: Peer Educator ~ Applications due April 2

Straight Talks, the LGBTQA Student Resource Center’s Peer Education Program, is currently recruiting student volunteers to become peer educators. The Straight Talks Peer Education Program is designed to uplift students and to provide them with an opportunity to challenge our communities to grow in their understanding and recognition of sexual and gender diversity. Peer educators assist in educating students and the Penn State community about LGBTQA+ identities, experiences, and challenges through the delivery of Straight Talks presentations and Ally 101 Workshops. Through participation as peer educators, students will develop personal and leadership skills, including but not limited to peer education, group facilitation, outreach and advocacy. PFP Service / Leadership Requirement

Fellows are expected to take on a leadership role or offer volunteer services to a community of their choice totaling at least 50 hours during their college career. Participants in the Presidential Leadership Academy automatically meet this requirement. To document a leadership or service experience, download the Leadership or Service Documentation Form; complete and submit it using the contact information on the form. Hours may be reported as they are completed for short-term projects, or after the minimum time is met for long-term experiences.

Updating your Information in the Paterno Fellows Database

Check out the new PFP database! As you complete your Paterno Fellows requirements, you are responsible for marking them “Claimed Satisfied” or turning in the appropriate documentation forms. You should update the requirements you’ve met as you complete them. Please do not wait until your graduation semester. We need time to approve your submissions and mark them “Satisfied.” For further instructions, see the PFP website.
