Collegiate Laws of Life Essay Contest

First Place: “And They Were Found Wanting,” by Steven Schneible

The Collegiate Laws of Life Essay Contest asked Penn State students to explore ethical values and intercultural issues, and their talent for expressing their views in writing. Steven Schneible, ’21 Paterno Fellow and Schreyer Honors Scholar, English and Psychology, won First Place for his essay, “And They Were Found Wanting.” Read his essay here.

Social Media Disinformation and Implications for International Travelers

March 28, 12:30-1:30 p.m., 232AB HUB

Presenter Bina Surati has served as the South and Central Asia analyst at the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security since February 2015. Ms. Surati is responsible for providing the U.S. private-sector with unclassified security information, to enable them to make informed decisions about potential threats to their operations, facilities, and personnel.

Since joining OSAC, Bina has collaborated with the U.S. private sector and other U.S. government officials to produce analytical papers and presentations that have addressed issues of tactics and trends in terrorism as well as threats from crime and political violence, focusing on the implication for the U.S. private sector. Using her educational and functional expertise on counterterrorism, Bina has also instructed Eastern and Central European law enforcement professionals on the theory of terrorism, at the International Law Enforcement Agency in Budapest, Hungary.

“Understanding THON: For Which Kids? Starting a Conversation”

THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raises money to fight pediatric cancer, and thousands of Penn State students participate each year. During the forum, a panel of students and faculty will take turns expressing their views on THON, and a discussion will follow.

Info Session: Teaching English as a Second Language with Immersion in Ecuador

Learn instructional practices for teaching English to language learners as you embark on an international experience with Penn State’s Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate Program with Immersion in Ecuador. Explore the cultures and languages of Ecuador while developing teaching skills within a university setting in Ecuador. Live with a local family and explore Ecuador’s environmental “hotspots” — the cloud forest and Ecuador’s Andean peaks and highlands.

This Pennsylvania state-approved certificate program offers:
– a five-week international learning experience in Ecuador in June and July
– an intensive format over Spring and Summer sessions so you can complete coursework and practicum experience for the ESL certificate program in eight months
– online and weekend courses so that current teachers and undergraduate students can participate from a distance

University Libraries Student Employee Showcase

The College holds separate ceremonies and receptions throughout the day on Saturday for departments to celebrate their students’ achievements. LA 197 (3 cr) Interrogating Bias ~ Honors / Ethics Course for Summer 2019

Interrogating Bias is a 3-credit, online course that will be offered by the College of the Liberal Arts in Summer 2019. This course was offered as one credit under the title “Interrogating Prejudice“ in Fall 2017 as a way to help students talk about prejudice and how it was impacting the campus climate in the wake of the 2016 presidential election. In Summer 2019 we will delve deeper into various forms of bias (personal, racialized, gendered, structural, implicit, religious, weight, societal, etc.), how to notice and observe bias (through ethnography, mindfulness, and keeping a notebook), and how to think about and respond to bias (letter writing and in-the-moment). Students should leave the course with greater awareness and tools for addressing bias in social settings, the workplace, activist settings, and with family.

ENGL 202B-012 Honors — A unique, service-focused English 202

Paterno Fellows can earn either internship or service hours for taking this course.

– Learn about literacy through exciting texts and invigorating class discussions
– Participate in community-based literacy service projects
– Tutor adults who are striving to improve their own literacy skills
– Satisfy your English 202 requirement while earning community-focused internship credits
– All students, regardless of major, are welcome
– Prerequisites: English 015, English 030, or English/CAS 137H/138T and the successful completion of 27.1 credits

The course is offered every fall and spring semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:35 p.m. until 2:50 p.m.

ENGL 464M Japanism/Occidentalism ~ Honors / Ethics Course

Course # 26339  |  Professor Christopher Reed  |  MoWe 6:00PM – 7:15PM

This class examines the reciprocal relationship between Japan and the West, focusing on texts and images produced between the 1860s and the 1960s. This changing relationship was important to both Western and Japanese history during this period as both cultures (and subcultures within them) shaped themselves through their perceptions of the other. This course emphasizes how cross-cultural perceptions are shaped by the desires and needs of the perceivers, how misrecognitions become meaningful, how cultures can come to understand themselves through the gaze of an outsider. Topics include theories and literatures of exoticism, the conflation of modernism with western values (in both Japan and Europe/North America), the construction of “tradition,” the relationship of gender and sexualities to all of these ideas, and the specific history of Japan’s distinctive relationship to westerness.

Language Institute and STARTALK Arabic Academy Summer Programs

The Language Institute at Penn State offers summer language programs designed for persons seeking to develop proficiency in a foreign language, including English as a second language. You can earn up to 12 credits in just eight weeks of intensive learning.

We encourage you to apply for a scholarship worth up to 90% of your tuition for the STARTALK Arabic Academy or a partial scholarship for other available languages.

Ethics Courses

Check our website for courses you can take to meet the PFP Ethics requirement. New courses are added as departments alert us of their offerings, or as students bring them to our attention. Students must complete 3 credits in ethics (one 3-credit course, or a series of 1- or 2-credit courses) before graduation.

Call for Applications: Rock Ethics Institute Thesis and Research Awards

Proposal Deadline: March 29, 2019

The Rock Ethics Institute is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2019-2020 Thesis and Research Awards offered in conjunction with the Paterno Fellows Program. These awards are for undergraduate students in the Paterno Fellows Program who are working on ethics-related topics and research either within or in preparation for their honors theses. Public Humanities Fellowship

Are you an undergraduate student with an interest in the humanities who cares about social issues? A Public Humanities Fellowship at the Humanities Institute will provide you with experience relating your study of history, philosophy, literature, or other humanities subjects to the world.

Fellows will:
– Take two courses specifically designed for real-world application post-graduation
– Participate in outreach events in the local community
– Gather with humanities scholars actively working in the field
– Receive a $1000 stipend upon completion of Fellowship requirements

Birkle Student Engagement Awards

Applications Due by March 29

The Center for Democratic Deliberation annually recognizes students who help to advance the Center’s mission of promoting democratic deliberation. Nominees may be recognized for working to enhance public awareness of important issues, helping to shape ongoing public discussions in novel and constructive ways, or upholding high standards of public deliberation in their own speaking and writing. Contributions could originate as classroom exercises, service-learning assignments, academic research, or internship projects. Whatever their academic origin, nominees’ contributions should be designed to engage audiences beyond the classroom in order to make credible contributions to the public good. More info…

Libraries offers $1,250 award for outstanding undergraduate thesis

Deadline to submit: April 9

Penn State University Libraries invites submissions for the eighth annual competition for the Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis Award. The competition aims to find the best research by a Penn State undergraduate in consultation with his or her adviser. The winner will receive $1,250, and awards of $750 and $500 will be presented to the second- and third-place recipients, respectively.  Full story

Penn State Center for the Study of Sports in Society 2019 Undergraduate Research Exploration Grant

Apply by April 10

This grant program, sponsored by the PSU Center for the Study of Sports in Society and the Penn State Bookstore, supports undergraduate student engagement in original research, scholarship, and creative work under the direct supervision of a Penn State faculty member. We anticipate offering one or two $2000 grants for the summer of 2019. Applications for the 2019 awards are due by April 10, 2019.

Center for the Study of Sports in Society Exploration grants support student-initiated collaborations with faculty in any field that investigate the role of sport (broadly defined) in any aspect of human culture. These collaborations should include the basic components of scholarly research projects:
a) the conceptualization of a question, focus, or problem;
b) the writing of a formal proposal;
c) the identification and implementation of methods and the execution of the research design;
d) and the communication of results (through a written report or article, or an exhibition or performance, or some other appropriate mechanism for disseminating findings).

Projects should be primarily the student’s own work; although the project may be related to the supervising faculty member’s research or scholarly interests, it should not simply provide assistance to faculty work.

2020 Penn State UNESCO Paris Fellows Program

Application Deadline: May 10, 2019

The 2020 Penn State UNESCO Fellows Program will be a highly selective and significant professional development experience for exceptional Penn State graduate and/or upper level undergraduate students. Selected students will be named as UNESCO Fellows and assigned for between six-twelve months to UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

The main focus area for this cohort of Fellows will be assisting in research, program, and policy development related to Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE). Within this broad topic and context, expertise and interest in communications, STEM/STEAM education for women and girls, PVE education, gender issues, social/psychological development, educational programming, cultural/historical studies, youth development, legal studies, natural sciences, sustainable development, and other related areas will be engaged. These correspond to the major focus sectors within UNESCO (Education, Natural Sciences, Communication and Information, Social and Human Sciences, and Culture).

This highly selective program will result in a total cohort of 10 Fellows being assigned to Paris. These will reflect a mixture of students from Penn State, Georgetown, Salisbury, and George Washington Universities. More info…

ClearWater Conservancy Watershed Cleanup Day

April 20, 8:00 a.m.-Noon

Join us for our Annual Watershed Cleanup Day! We need your help in making this year’s event a success. The big cleanup will be followed by a volunteer picnic at Circleville Park, with games and live music, making it a perfect way to spend your Earth Day Weekend! Cleanup areas are identified by local municipalities, concerned citizens, and Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority. Volunteers interested in helping on cleanup day can sign up as a group, family, or individual. We then match volunteers to the sites based on a number of factors, such as location and group size. We provide everyone with gloves, bags, and safety vests and coordinate the collection of all the waste from staging areas. PFP Service / Leadership Requirement

Fellows are expected to take on a leadership role or offer volunteer services to a community of their choice totaling at least 50 hours during their college career. Participants in the Presidential Leadership Academy automatically meet this requirement. To document a leadership or service experience, download the Leadership or Service Documentation Form; complete and submit it using the contact information on the form. Hours may be reported as they are completed for short-term projects, or after the minimum time is met for long-term experiences.
