On January 25, Krista Quesenberry presented a town hall session on grading with Canvas. Below is a set of instructions for creating a custom grading scheme (also found in the PowerPoint above). Creating your own scheme can help counteract the tendency Canvas has of translating every letter grade into the highest number possible in the grading scale.
To revise the standard grading scheme or to create a custom grading scheme:
- Select “Letter grade” from “Display grade as” drop-down menu.
- Scroll down on the “View/Edit Grading Scheme” pop-up window.
- Click “Manage grading schemes.
- Review existing grading scheme.
- Click “+Add New Grading Scheme” button in top right corner.
- Enter a unique title.
- Edit existing grading scheme (e.g. remove “C-” and “D+” grades, or create “Ch+,” “Ch,” and “Ch-” grades).
- Click “Save” button.
- Return to assignment “Edit” screen.
- Click “View Grading Scheme” under “Display grade as” (be sure “Letter grade” is selected from drop-down menu).
- (Click “ Select another scheme.”
- (Your customized grading scheme should appear in menu at left of the pop-up screen (may require scrolling down).
- Click on the title of the grading scheme you want to use.
- Click “Use this grading standard.”
- Click “Done.”
