Making Your Impact as an Intern

By: Megan Lantz

It’s no secret that starting a new job can be intimidating, especially when you’re unfamiliar with the work culture and people. As an intern, you’re starting at the bottom of the totem pole, so the interactions you have with your superiors and colleagues should be kept professional and respectful. With this being said, it’s crucial for interns to make themselves known in the company and become a friendly face to their superiors – here’s how to do just that.

  1. Make the effort to ask questions. If you’re confused about a task you were assigned, it’s perfectly OK to ask for clarification! If you miss a step in their explanation, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat a step that you missed. If you understand the task you’re assigned but are curious as to why you were assigned that task… just ask! Taking the initiative to learn why a task was assigned to you, and how that task will not only benefit you but the company as a whole, will always be impressive to your superiors.
  2. It stands out when you ask your colleagues and superiors if they’d like to grab lunch with you or even a quick coffee break. Don’t be afraid to invite them. Taking the initiative to get to know your colleagues will make you stand out and also will provide you with an opportunity to ask them some questions. For example, you have the opportunity to ask how they’re enjoying their time at the company, any tips they might have for you as an intern or any other questions you have.
  3. If you don’t have work to do, ask for more. Be careful not to do this in a nagging way, casually say “Hey, is there anything else I can help you out with today? I’ve finished up everything and am happy to help you out with anything else!” Not only does this show them you’re taking initiative, but is also a great opportunity to show your supervisor what you’ve already accomplished in the day.
  4. Attend every meeting you’re invited to. Sometimes a meeting might seem pointless if you aren’t able to contribute, but these meetings should not be shrugged off. Being as involved as possible as an intern is impressive, even if that means just being present in a meeting and listening to what others are bringing to the table. With this being said, if the opportunity presents itself to share an idea or an opinion you have,  go ahead and share it! If the company values its interns, they’ll be happy to hear a new idea or perspective.
  5. Always maintain a positive and upbeat attitude in the office. Often times interns are known to be assigned some of the less fun work that others might not want to deal with or might not have time to deal with. You must accept these tasks with positivity! Any work assigned to you is a way to exemplify your knowledge and skillset, and a way to learn and grow! Always remind your colleagues that you’re happy to help, no matter the task.

If you follow these tips, you have a better shot at standing out as an intern. Best of luck, from a fellow intern!
